Buying A Car

Hubby and I are looking into buying a new car (well new to us anyway) and I was wondering if anybody is able to look up the repair history on the cars based on VIN. I don't know if that is something you could do with a Carfax report or not, that's why I'm asking here.

Our Focus has been such a money pit. We have only owned it 2 years and have already had to put 3k of repairs into it at least. We had a Ford Escort before that and that one worked great for my husband with only the timing belt replaced once towards the end.

I think somebody was able to do an OASIS check once for our current car and we could see what the old owner had taken it in for, what the old owners name was (since it was on the warranty)

The OASIS couldn't tell us about the possible problems we'd have in the future though. Looked like our car had been good then once we got it everything went to crap

Best of luck, I don't really trust Carfax myself. I've looked up cars that I know have been in accidents, but nothing shows up in Carfax. Think of it this way, how much would dealers pay to have cars show up clean? How does that compare to what you'd pay to see if a car was clean? Your best bet is to find a car from an individual, and look it over very carefully. Check everything you can about vehicle reliability from Consumer Reports, that helps, but even though manufacturers make a good car, they can still make one bad one out of all the good ones.

There are few rules I'll share with you that might help.

1) Never buy a car you haven't seen in daylight.
2) Never buy a car that appears to have been repainted, or if part of the shade of the paint is slightly off making it look like there is a shadow, but there can't be a shadow because of the lighting.
3) Beware of cars with engine compartments that are completely spotless, especially if it looks very shiny. Used car people like to sell cars from their homes that they can't sell off the lot. To make the underhood shiny, they will clean it, then spray everything with Armor-All. It makes the plastic and rubber very shiny.
4) Take as much time as you possibly can. Rushing into purchasing the first "good" deal you come across might get you into trouble.

I wish you the best of luck, I hope you find a great car this time. Oh yeah, and no matter what you purchase feel free to come back to FF and ask for advice on any problems you might have. We don't excommunicate people who don't drive Focis

Not only does Carfax not have the repair records of a car, the local Ford dealer who sold my Focus new to the previous owner (and did most of the servicing afterwards) refused to share with me any of that service information when I bought it. HOLES!
