Let the Repairing Begin

Ok, so my wife wants a car. She can't even drive yet, but she wants a car. I only want certain cars for her because I know from my experiences that these will hold up in accidents very well. Here's the list in order of preference.
1) BMW, 325, 323
2) Volvo, Any model, she likes S40's
3) Ford, probably Focus for fuel economy, but I'm against small cars
4) Nissan, Altima

Of course I really want the BMW for her because I know those are freaking tanks. A Volvo would be second choice, very safe cars, but don't get the fuel economy, and I'm not sure about them having the weight advantages of the BMW.

The only problem is that I'm freaking poor. I do have some cards I can play with friends to get into dealer auctions, but I'll need cash. So what I'm going to do is what I did to fund my life during the jobless 2002 year: repair junk cars and sell for cash. I just missed a sweet deal that got me thinking about it again: a 2000 626 that needed a timing belt. Even with 100k miles the NADA value was $4500. Sadly, I think it went to the junkyard. So I kept looking. Today's deals are not so sure.

1) 92 Mercedes 300E $750, the car has been listed for the past 3 months. Supposedly no problems. I'd consider keeping this one for the wife.
2) 99 Ford Taurus $850, bad head gasket so the owner says. All else works.

I'm thinking the Taurus might sell for $2k if I get it running again. Not much of a profit margin. I don't know about the Mercedes. If it has no body damage, I could probably sell it. The value is around $3k with 200k miles. I'm just wondering why someone would want to sell it for so little? I know some people are idiots about cars, but this seems like too much of an idiot. I'm going to have to call this guy.

Which one do you think I should go for? Late model or premium luxury?

I really don't know about the others, but from what I have seen in the body shop my brother works in the Focus and Fusion can take a rear hit pretty good. I saw a Focus that was hit by a bigger car (not sure what it was) at about 40mph and it was an easy repair for my brother just needed to remove the entire rear clip and weld on a new one. The Fusion was the same way.
Don't know if this helps in your search, good luck in your search.

I don't know anything about them but I'd buy the Merc then let your wife use it. For $750 you can't go wrong.

What ever you do don't buy an Audi S4 if you want a car that holds up well in an accident. My wife had a modest front end accident at about 15mph in our 05 that totalled the car $27k to repair it. The timing belt got dislodged causing major engine damage as well as the body work.

But my friends' brother owns a 08 BMW 335 or something, and has a family of 3 children I think. He claim that it can get up to 30 MPG on the highway, along with 4 of his other cars; even though it's recommend to take premium he still uses regular unleaded for a turbocharged vehicle.

LOL My wife never learned how to drive. I've been teaching her, she has a learners permit. In all the places she's lived there was good public transportation- well except the Phillipines. I wouldn't call their transportation good- but it's all most people can afford. She's never even ridden a bike- she rented one once, but gave it back after she fell down a few times. It's been difficult, but she's learning. I'd hoped that a realistic Logitech steering wheel and GT4 on the PS2 would at least give her a cool way to practice. Instead, I'm having fun with it- LOL.

Now, back to the cars, I wish someone would've called me back on either of them. The Taurus was sold, the Mercedes guy hasn't called, I may call him again, and the Mazda 626 lady sent it to the junkyard. I'll keep looking though.

Thanks DuratecoftheDesert- that's one of the reasons I really like BMW's, tanks that get good fuel economy. I hope something good will come along soon- at least something I can fix to make cheese.
