Front End Noise?

Good day! I am new on here, and actually I have been using this site as a resource in gathering information on what all comes with getting a focus as I am looking to buy one. My question is, today I looked at a 01' ZX3 with about 60k miles, and it was great except that when we test drove it, I noticed a subtle almost growling noise from both the front and the left front. It almost sounded like metal on metal. The noise was only active when the car was moving, brake pressure had no effect, neither did pushing in the clutch, hard acceleration, or turning. I was thinking possibly a wheel bearing? But I honestly don't have much of a clue as I couldn't put it up on a lift and have a better look, neither am I very familiar with this car. The CV boots looked good, the brakes were in good condition too. Any idea's? Thanks a lot for your help, this site has been very helpful!

Welcome! It's fairly common for the wheel bearings to wear and start making noise. It's pretty easy to replace them but I would guess that's the problem. Does it make the sound while driving straight or when turning? I had a wheel bearing start to go out and it only made a growling sound while turning.

It makes just as much noise going in a straight line or while turning. How much would it cost to fix, assuming I do the work myself? Thanks

I think you can pick up a new bearing for about $40 or so. You will need to have the old bearing pressed out of the spindle assembly but that's the hardest part. Any shop can do this for you.

Thanks again, are wheel bearings a common item to go out? There isn't any other more expensive items in the drivetrain that are a common problem, which fit these characteristics? I know no one can predict the future I just want to make sure I'm not getting in over my head by purchasing this car,
