cold air intake

So I was driving my focus the other day and I was wondering...

How does a cold air intake work?

I have one, my bf got it. I just want to know how it works, cuz my focus accelerates like nothin.

Thanx,

Generally they are higher flowing than the stock air intake, and they get cooler air from outside the engine compartment (mine is down by the air dam).

As for giving power, this all depends on how restrictive the stock intake was, and how many other mods have been done. Also, IMHO the effects are more noticeable with a manual transmission. Every focus I have driven with an auto is dog slow (the transmission steals 25% of the available torque). With a manual the parasitic power loss is much lower, and its easier to run higher rpm which is where the intake will start to work.

I'll give you the short version, the long version can be found here...

They are designed to allow colder air into the engine and provide more of it.
