So, I’m On My Way To Work Today…

(It’s been a loooong time since I’ve posted one of my little stories)

So, as I was saying…
I’m on my way to work today.
Doing something I should know better not to do.
Daydreaming away, on “AutoPilot” cruising through the parking garage and
rounding this turn...

A quick survey of the damage showed a torn sidewall at the least, and maybe a scratched/bent rim.
(Frankly, I was way too embarrassed to bend down and check further.)

I scurried into work, hoping nobody saw, getting more PO’d by the second.
I grabbed the phone and called up my favorite “tire guy” at Tire Rama here in town.
I was hoping he could get a new replacement shipped out as soon as possible.
As is his usual recommendation, he said; “call Tire Rack, it’ll be a lot cheaper”.
Yep…about $35 cheaper as it turns out after hanging up the phone from Tire Rack.
^^^Hindsight…This time… (daily driver tire set)
I should have purchased the road hazard warranty.
New tire is on the way, be here Monday.

But I digress…
The poor wounded vehicle is sitting out in the parking garage,
most likely losing air from the RR tire.
I high-tail it back out of the office, in hopes of getting the car home before I have to change a tire on the road.
^^^One of my least favorite things to do…especially when you’ve got a fully equipped warm shop back at home.
I get out to the car…the tire’s got air, and it’s holding steady from what I saw earlier.
Nuts…there’s curbage on the wheel…had to figure that.

Well, lets get this thing home safe and sound…
Ah crap, I forgot about the reserve light that’s been on for the last 40 miles, and it’s a hair over 15 to get home.
I choose the route that’s the easiest to get to a gas station, and has the least amount of tight left hand turns.
^^^Didn’t want to ask more of the tire than I needed…there’s a pretty good tear from what I can see.

Inspected wheel/tire while gassing up…
Tire doesn’t look as bad as I thought, (though, it ain’t goin’ any further than the drive home)
but the wheel's definitely got a boo boo.
I just want to get home at this point…no sense crying over scratched wheels.
^^^Yeah, right…

Safe journey, didn’t lose any air, and it rode smooth up to the 60mph speed limit on the way back.

It’s just a little flesh wound:

Well…maybe a flesh wound in need of a few stitches:
Wheel can be smoothed out, I’m just glad it’s not bent.
The camber looks just fine as well, considering how loud the bang was.

The ole Lab Hab,
(Actually new to me…if some of you ever saw my Bronco(the original Lab Hab) a few years back...
Sold it, and got a “hauler”, F-150)
is ready and willing to be pressed into service.

Kind of handy having a back-up vehicle.
(Actually I could have swapped my winter set on,
but I was in no mood for that at the moment.)

So, the moral of this story folks, is…PAY ATTENTION
Even a task as mundane as cruising through a parking garage can reach out and kick you in the ass if you don’t pay attention.
After 57,000+ miles (on these rough roads), and a few “off track” adventures on our AutoCross course,
it takes this parking garage to finally damage one of my wheels.
