Looking for a beater--advice?

Winter is quickly approaching and I'd rather not subject my Focus to salt, etc...especially with a wrapped, non-coated header.

Any words of advice on what a good beater to look at is???

I drove a 2-door '94 metro hatch in rough shape today. Guy wants $350 as-is, maybe $750 if he rebuilds the engine. It would get me where I'm going I think and he says it gets 47 mpg haha...that's pretty cool, but DEFINITELY a beater.

I was hoping for more of a 4-door wagon. Same guy also has a '92 4-door hatch. I was looking at Subaru wagons and also the infamous and rare Civic 4WD wagon.

Any recommendations? I need something reliable but basic, definitely like the idea of a wagon, want good mileage, and I really like cars that have character (rare, unique cars).

Also what I was thinking about doing was either...buying a PW Focus for fun, and then having this kind of decent beater-ish thing on the side, so if I decide to do that what would be recommendations for that? I was also thinking like maybe an S2000 or Miata and then beater-ish wagon on the side. Lots of options!!!

What should I do!?!?!?

Thanks.

every once in a while i see high mileage focuses for under 3 grand. since you already know the car, i'd suggest going that route. that's why all the honda guys have crappier hondas as their beaters... once you know where every bolt is, it's hard to rationalize any other car.

the civic wagovans aren't really that great. the AWD system on them is fragile, you lose a LOT in parts interchangeability, and almost all of them are beat up and rusty. You'd probably do better to get a regular civic hatch.

i also like the idea of a miata. if you have a bit of patience, you can find a 90 or 91 for around $1500 in decent shape. problem is, you might be looking at a new top, new headlight motors, etc, etc... 17 year old convertibles are rough.

An older Ford ranger would be great as stated above^^. Find one that has the 2.3 in it. Those things will run forever and get decent mileage.
