Question Drive or Overdrive?

Does anybody know what is the difference between "drive" and "overdrive"? Do you really save more gas in "drive"? How does it work? Yeah, first time in automatic trans; used to drive stick.

Overdrive allows your transmission to upshift to it's final gear for highway cruising. You're not going to save gas by using drive since you'll be cruising with alot higher revs. You'll usually just use drive going up or down mountain roads or towing.

Generally you would switch from OD to D to pass someone on the highway. OD is like the 5th gear in a MTX car.

I don't know if you have a tach, but if you do, watch the RPM's drop significantly when you shift into OD.

If you don't have a tach, at 70mph in D, your engine is running at around 4000 RPM. When you shift into OD, the RPM's drop to about 2500.

OMG I don't have D or OD. What's wrong with my car? Should I bring it into the shop? Is this going to be expensive. I just got off warranty!!

How can you not have D? Unless you have a manual car. You might not have Overdrive but I think thats standard on Automatics anyway.

I use to turn my OD off when I was just cruising around town but now just leave it on. The car shifts in and out of it by itself and I didnt notice any difference.
