Question Warranty on transmission?

Hey guys, my car is having some transmission issues. I drive a manual transmission '05 ZX3. It wont shift into 2nd, 4th, or Reverse gears. 1st, 3rd, and 5th work fine. I was just driving at a casual pace when this happened (I have never raced or abused the car).

I don't know much about transmissions so I took it into the dealership this morning. The car is still under warranty: it has 25K miles and is less than 3 yrs. old.

I do have a feeling that the dealership will try to get me to pay for the damage though. Does anybody have any experience with this? How do I get Ford to pay for it?

Ford Focuses have a 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a 5 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty...

If they say they won't cover the damage, take it to another dealer...Transmissions are covered under BOTH warranties...

Sounds like a linkage problem rather than an actual tranny problem. They should just be able to adjust it...

I've been through this. My 02 ate through several sets of gear syncros (on the top set of gears), necessitating rebuild until it occurred to someone at the dealer that maybe the linkage needed to be adjusted. Needless to say, this didn't occur until after the fourth transmission rebuild, and naturally, I ended up paying for the linkage adjustment. (adjustments are not covered under the 5/100 powertrain, but should be under the 3/36).

Thanks for the replies guys. To my relief, the repair WAS covered by warranty.

Apparently, the gear shift end was broken and the master cylinder was leaking fluid. So, they had to replace the gear shift end and the master cylinder.

Anybody know what might have caused this?

Occasionally, I'll drive at more aggressive pace which involves shifting gears faster. Would this cause the gear shift end to break after a while?

I want to avoid the same problem in the future; so what do have to change about my driving style? Am I slamming the gears home too hard?
