Talking Test drove an ST...

So I was driving along 59 yesterday and happend to spot a black ST sitting at a Ford dealership. So I hang a u-ey and pull into the dealership. I get out of my uber SPI and start to look the car over. I'ts covered in dust, but my truck is black, so I know how that is. It's a 2005 with 33k miles. The salesman spots me and my car, and I can see the saliva build up around his mouth. He has a fast paced-walk as he approches me, and greets me with the standard "Can I help you with anything?" I tell him I was in the market for one of these (not really) and asked for a test drive. He takes my license and returns about five minutes later with the keys.

He unlocks the car remotley (oh yes, I said REMOTLEY) with some kind of dark magic device on the keys. I sit down inside and take a look around. There are more of the these dark magic buttons EVERYWHERE! Some control the windows and locks, while others control cruise control and remote stereo controls. (If any of you has ever owned a very base-model Focus, you'd be scared too.) I adjust the seat, start up the engine and I'm welcomed to a very nice-sounding exhaust. I notice that the seats are a huge upgrade from the ones included with the LX. They are firmer than my seats, which is good, and they hug me. They were amazing. Then...the moment of truth.

I shift into first gear, and pull out of the dealership onto a back road. I punch the throttle (not really "floor") the same way I would do in my car. OH...MY...GOD... It puts me back in the seat, and I am one VERY happy Chuck. I shift into second, and the same thing happens again. I am so rediculously impressed. I knew it would be quicker than my 110hp tire smoker, but WOW! I wasn't really paying attention to the handling, becuase I was too entranced by the acceleration. The four-wheel discs worked like a dream too. The only thing I was really disappointed by was the shifter. It felt like the shaft was made of rubber, and felt WAY too tall. That's probably just becuase I'm spoiled by my FC short-throw in my SPI.

I am REALLY wanting that car. He was asking $10k for it which doesn't seem like a bad price too me (seeing how I paid only $4k less for my LX that had 20k more miles on it). The big thing right now is my truck. I would have to trade it in, but I love my truck and it comes in handy when I need to haul stuff around, not to mention it's paid for. I've said earler that the only way I'd ever own another Focus is if the turbo-diesel became available, but the ST really suprised me, and I definetly wouldn't mind owning one at all.

hehehe

The little motor isn't half bad either. I've surprised some friends. Ford or Mazda, whoever designed this motor really deserves some credit for the design. I've not driven many 4 cyls that produce a gutsy powerband like this one does.
