Thumbs down SRT-4 Children and their Parents

So I work with my brother at a small used car dealership here in NJ. We have some really nice cars. We have some really cheap crappy cars. We also buy directly here at the dealership if you have an extra car that you do not use, need, or want.

Well a young SRT-4 owner pulls up interested in our Dodge Ram 1500. Mom and girlfriend present. So we grab the notebook to take some notes. We also pull the carfax to get the history.

I already new this was going to be good. Mom said "I bought the car last september 2005 and now my son wants to trade in his peice of shit." Now I am trying really hard not to laugh. Son is kinda smirking at the comment. At this moment I look at the carfax. Matches with her claimed purchase date, bought. She adds they paid $16,500 for it with 33,000 miles. Already paid too much for the damn thing, but her son just "had to have it." The car now has 68,000 miles. Damn kid drove 30k plus in just over a year, "ballin".

Now the glory part. The overview of his SRT-4, and one word comes to mind, a very very very sarcastic "GLORIOUS". Well I notice as I walked to the drivers side door, someone tried to break in. Then I notice the exhaust was pulled for a straight pipe single side exit. OMG. In addition, the rear end sported a "classy" dented, chipped, and peeling bumper. "Holla."

Now for the passenger side. It was , literally. He got keyed, and guess what it said, "". Now I am trying not to laugh again. So i start moving to the front. The hood also got tagged right down the middle with some elegant key patterns. B-E-A-utiful.

Call the owner of the dealership, tell him what we got here. He goes offer them trade in of $6,000. This was being generous since the car doesnt have the stock exhaust (surely your average consumer doesnt see the side exit an upgrade, especially with the two slots in the rear bumper missing some nice chrome tips). Also, the car needed at least $1,500 in body work and paint. So add those two costs together and you get $1,800 worth to fix it up. Oh did I mention he cut the stock springs, add another $200. Sweet bumpy ride! He literally killed the value of the car. BTW, dealer trade in books value the car at $10,000 when it was at 35,000 miles. In other words, I already felt bad mom got ripped when they originally bought it. Now with 60,000 plus miles on the car the dealer trade in floats between $6,000-$7,000 without the car being trashed. Her son....well I'm speechless right now.

So we tell him whats it worth. Wasnt suprised to see the dissappointment. But his mom knew it, recognized it, and understood it. Her son was a jackass. Morale of the story, don't be the typical "sport compact super kid!" Appreciate your car, keep it clean, and don't piss off other young a-holes who have sharp keys! He screwed himself over and his mom who was nice enough to buy him the car in the first place. BOO THAT MAN!

Brought to you by a proud Focus Owner.

Good story. I see so much of that kind of stuff. A kid trying to save money, jerry-riggin everything together. Makes that car just look like such crap. If you're going to do it, do it right!

When they got the quote for $6,000; they said we need more for the car. We told them they won't get more. That we most likely are giving them the highest value on their car that they will see. I think they are in that mental state where they just can't let it go for such a loss. They lost all interest in buying a newer car/truck when they got the $6,000 tade in value offer.

But each mile they drive it, more value is lost. We see it all the time. Eventually the owner realizes they are in a position that is only going to get worse. Some come back, some don't. It sucks.

Surprise, surprise...why should spoiled children take care of their cars when they know mommy and daddy will just buy them a new one when they trash the last one?

There was a guy in my brother's class who got a brand-new Evo for his 16th birthday. The car lasted about 3 months before he wrapped it around a telephone pole and totalled it. Then his parents got him a S2000, which lasted a little bit longer before it too was headed for the junkyard. And then they got him something like a WRX or RSX-S...three high-dollar cars within a year. People like that deserve to get killed in an accident caused by their own stupidity or lack of concern for the vehicle they're driving.

She was a nice lady too. Felt bad for her. And her son seemed ok too. Probably the case was his cockiness spooled up with the turbo!

Yeah, but didn't you trade your Focus in with a bunch of expensive aftermarket stuff (ie, wheels) still on it?
