2003 Focus ZX3 Build in Texas

Hi everyone,

I have started my stereo install in my 2003 ZX3. Before I joined the Army I installed stereos at a local shop. In 1999 my buddy and I went to the USAC World Finals in Kansas City. We competed in the Bass Olympics and DB Drag racing. We took first place in both events and set world record for highest DB level with 100 watts rated at 4ohms. 169.9 DB was set!!!!! Also for the old timers here we got to meet Alma Gates, the owner of the Precision Power Ford Bronko which at that time help the world record for DB at about 173. Mind blown!!!! For anyone that knows that is an incredible reading. During the season we were consistantly hitting over 167 DB everytime. Pictures of our ride and system will follow.

On to my coming install. I will be installing a double din radio, brand not known yet, Hifonics amps, Precision Power component speakers, 6.5 three ways, 6 Precision Power 12's. Extra batteries and capacitors will also be included.

To start the install I have removed the entire rear interior and seats. Pictures below. The 12's will be set up in a tunnel formation just behind the front seats. There will be custom kick panels installed and some reworking of the door panels.

This project is going to take some time so updates will be happening as the system progresses.

Pictures!

Not trying to knock ya, but just making sure you're aware..... Hifonics and PPI are NOT the same company they once were. The brand names have been sold off and now they're off-the-shelf Chinese products. Zero engineers work for either company (or conglomerate really). There's no R&D department. The name of the game is move product to people who recognize the name. Just FYI.

I now work with a guy who worked for PPI in their heyday. He helped develop the 1/4 wave technology that got Team Gates on top. The company closed due to embezzlement/money problems.

Hi Firebirdude,

Thanks for reminding me about that. I have heard that happened to a few other company's also. This system is going to be just for me so I am not too worried. If you know what you are doing you can make radio shack subs sound good. For people that don't know the WoW factor is all I need...lol.

I have been doing some measuring today and decided to change the sub configuration some. The 6 12's the way I had envisioned just would not fit right. Used my garage floor as a piece of paper and drew out the setup full size and just didn't fit right. So I have decided to use 8 10'S instead. The shape will be similar to the design we used in my friends SPL Ranger. Hopefully by the end of the week I will have some of the wood to start building the floor.

The enclosure is going to be a sealed design. At my age now I prefer the more punchy bass than the old school drop it as low as you can get it boomy bass.

Great history and looks like a nice project. What kind of batteries are you going to use? Does anyone ever use 6V golf cart batteries (just wondering since they seem popular in solar setups because of price/ah).
