Frakus MK3 Rescue Build

I found this wrecked 2014 SE Hatch 5M with 6,000 miles on it and decided to bring it back to life.

Originally I was trying to get a new Fiesta ST, but Ford didn't like that I had a recent loan out for my motorcycle and wouldn't go through with it, even though my credit is good. I started looking around for salvage cars to build since the Focus can be had for a fraction of the cost of new, and I've built cars in the past. I'll pick up an ST later. Oh, and not having a huge car payment is a plus.

I brought this one home because it was a manual trans hatchback, which were my requirements. It was also hit VERY lightly. Bags didn't blow, no frame damage, just bolt on stuff.

Here we go...

Still has that new car smell.

Not bad. I brought it home.

Went parts collecting. This was the hard part. I had to drive all over the state to get everything. Everyone is rebuilding these things and parts are scarce.

I ordered things I couldn't find locally.

-ST front end
-ST side skirts
-A/C condenser
-Headlights

Got it naked. Radiator, condenser, fan, airbox, battery box were all crunched. It looks like it was a very low speed accident, like they went into the ditch and hit some brush. There were light scratches on both sides of the car I later buffed out.

No frame damage. Bumper support was fine.

Radiator support painted and installed. Coolers installed. FSWERKS intake with ITG filter installed. Battery box and other broken plastic replaced.

Headlights fit. Gave the car a bath.

Interior cleaned back to new (didn't take much)

Painting underside of the hood

Hood fitted.

I prepped the car for paint and dropped it off at the body shop to get sprayed. Had them do the new side skirts, bumper, hood, windshield pillars, driver fender, and rear valence to match the new look of the car.

The 16" wheels weren't going to cut it, and this was a budget build, so off to Craigslist...

Kosei Sport Edition D3 in 17" made for Volvo. The finish was in rough shape. For $125 they'll do.

12 hours later-

I did a custom color by layering bright silver with graphite then tons of clear. Turned out pretty good! They have tons of depth and change color depending on light from silver-grey to almost a dark bronze. I like.

I also found some new tires on Craigslist for a steal, even came with a receipt from Discount Tire and a warranty card! Minus $200 from what the guy paid. His wife ended up trading in the car they were supposed to go on. They're Vogue Signature V's which are a touring tire and had very good reviews. I drive a lot, and these will keep me out of trouble for now. Sticky tires will come later.

It's a wheel. I had to get the correct hub-centric spacers for it. They're 70.1 mm.

I also got 4 Motorcraft TPMS off Ebay for $70. Ford wanted over $400.

Congratulations man.

Had the car been "totaled" by the insurance company ? Salvage Title?

Thank you. Looks like you got one helluva car.

Found a Factory Ford/ Thule roof rack on Craigslist. The guy traded in his ST. I always have roof racks on my cars for bikes.

Changed the oil to synthetic, installed an FSWERKS rear motor mount, Curt 1.25" hitch, got tires and wheels mounted, TPMS programmed.

With my brother's 2013 Hatch

Thanks. I love it so far.

It was totaled, salvage title. How? Not really sure. Next step is to have it inspected by the state and they'll issue a Prior Salvage title.

Fog lights came in.

I also took the time to install a DIY Home Depot lip while I was down there. Instead of using tape, I used wide plastic washers and small screws to secure it. That way it's not going strip off my paint and I can replace it easily.

Buffed out all the scratches and scuffs, waxed the whole car to seal the new paint.

Bike trays mounted. This is how the car looks currently, minus the dirty windows. I cleaned them. There's a crazy amount of cleaning to be done with salvage cars, even if it doesn't look like it. They travel around the country on trucks and sit in lots for months out in the elements. It's a lot of work to bring it back up to new condition. This one came from Virginia. The registration stickers can be seen in the windshield at the top of the thread. I can tell it was a personal car because there were only 2 phones in the SYNC memory. A rental would usually have a lot more.
