It all comes down to money. If you want the extra performance, you need premium fuel. If you can only afford 87 octane, or refuse to buy premium for what ever reason, just leave the stock calibration. Heck my father/mother in law still believe gas is gas and all the octane grades are a scam. Would anyone believe Mustang 5.0/GT-500 owners using 87 octane?...............I do because I have witnessed it!. Of course it does not help that most dealers recommend 87 octane(regualar) gas for everything except diesel trucks.

Even on 87 octane, the knock sensor can be active with the factory calibration. In most cases 89 octane will keep the knock sensor in check. Now if you have a aftermarket performance calibration, 91-93 octane premium fuel is required.

i just read that the octane rating means the amount of compression it takes to combust without spark.. wouldn't that mean that you would need a higher compression engine in order to run higher octane fuel? does a tune make your engine have higher compression?

No a tune wont make more compression , yes running a higher octane will help to get rid of any spk knock , this is where a tune would also help
