Thumbs up SCT how-to data logging files (record, edit, and review)

SCT Xcal 3 How-to Data logging

I decided to write a how-to on data logging and try to clean up some things. This should show you how to data log and a few tricks that you can do with the data provided with the excel files it is saved as. in the future this will also include livewire data logging through the xcal

This part of the how-to will explain datalogging with the xcal 3 to your laptop/computer.

First you need
  • a cable, a USB A to B cable,
you can buy these from newegg.com or from your local electronics store i.e. walmart, bestbuy, radioshack, etc.. for about 6.00$ to 20.00$
(you don't need to buy a 20.00$ that is just wasting money)
  • SCT tuner
  • laptop/computer

Then you need to download LiveLink for your device, you must know your s/n to download the software, which is located on the back of your SCT device. ALSO under Device info, on the programmer's menu selection.

Setting up your tuner to use with your computer

For those with part number 3000: click here Then enter your s/n and click the "submit" button

Then you want to click the download button beside the LIVELINK software info.

For those with part number 3015: click here Then enter your s/n and click the "submit" button

Then you want to click the download button beside the LIVELINK software info.

Once download is complete, run the .exe program and install it.
After it is installed connect you SCT tuner device VIA the usb a to B cable.

NOTE! from SCTflash.com
Quote:
If a Tuner was plugged in before the software was installed it may be necessary to install the drivers manually. A sign of this is if you see Errors coming up when trying to use the functions of the X3/Livewire Updater. “Failed to Write Data” "Connect Livewire" or others.

To Check this out, have the tuner plugged in.

Click on Start
Then Right Click on My Computer
Then Hit Properties

Windows Vista or Windows 7 computers - you can go ahead and click on Device Manager on the top left corner of the active window.

Windows XP - When the System Properties Window Opens Up Click on the Hardware Tab

Then Click on the Device Manager Button.

Within the Device Manager list, we are looking for an item with a Yellow Exclamation Mark. It may say LIVEWIRE, UPGRADE LOADER, UNKNOWN DEVICE, X3P Device or others.

Right click on the item that has the Yellow Mark on it, and then click on Update Driver.

This will open the FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD. Let it search automatically and install the drivers.

NOTE: This will only work if the software has been installed.
Once this has been done you can now use your SCT device with LIVELINK

(the rest will be finished this weekend, I am heading home for the weekend from college and will finish this how-to then...)

Looking at data files via Excel spreadsheets

Once you have recorded your first data log session and saved it to your computer you can open it up in excel (Microsoft office)

Then, go to your folder that you designated as your data log folder and if you have excel installed on your computer it should have the excel icon as the file icon. The files highlighted in YELLOW are the excel files, the other files that you see are tune files.

double click to open them up in excel, if they don't open with excel right click the file then open with then find excel...

once in excel you can see the title are a little hidden (you can't see the whole PID name) click the top left column labeled "A" and drag over to the last column that you have data in. for my spreadsheet my last column is "L"

It should be highlighted like this

once it is all highlighted, double click between the "A" and "B" columns and it will look like this

once you have this done you are set to go!

go about switching up columns and such to compare data side by side to seconds or whatever you would like. BTW incase you are wondering, switching up columns will NOT screw up looking (reviewing) the data in LIVELINK.

(more to be added at a later date)

Wish I had this when I was tuning the first time. It took me twice as long to do anything because I couldn't figure out how to do it. Nice job.

Why look at data in excel when you can just load it up in livelink?

this would have been helpful if it didnt figure out how to do the first part myself. right now i am stuck and datalogging itself. i selected all the pids and cant seem to get it to start, it shows stuff on the xcal but not on the comp and when i try to transfer the log from the device it says i have to enable JIT debugging, i have no idea what this means...

it shows a wider range of data than what you are looking at in livelink, also to find out your 0-60 time it will be easier to use excel because you can select the cells that your speed starts till 60 then figure out what your 0-60 is.

but in all seriousness if you use excel for some files, you can mess around with the PID's and see things compared easier, at least I did.

have you selected more than 24-25 pids? I can't remember the exact number but you can only have so many PIDS active at once.

if you are datalogging using livelink you don't have to transfer the file from the device to your computer, the xcal 3 acts like a translator for the program on the computer to grab the information and store it on your computer completely going around having to upload it to your laptop from your device.
