Question 05MY IPK forces ECU shutdown @ 7800RPM?

Has anyone seen or know of a solution for this problem?

On my 05MY Duratec I have extended the rev limits in the PCM to 8000, but the IPK is entering a "mechaincal overrev" protection @ around 7800.

This is NOT simply hitting a rev limiter.....

When this happens the PCM is shut down, the PATS light is flashing, datlogging interrupted and the engine cannot be restarted until the ignition is recycled.

Codes are set for "engine exceeded mechanical rev limts" etc, but like I said the rev limits in the PCM are set to 8000.

This has happened to me 2x previosuly with the stock engine, if I hit 3rd instead of 5th on hard right handers, like the uphill @ WGI.

Now that I want to rev as high as 8000, this is a serious limitation.

Anyone know how to defeat this function which is believe is managed in the IPK?

I'm using SCT PRP.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm going to be racing @ watkins Glen this weekend, it's my first time out with the new engine.

So I'm hoping for a miracle here, that someone knows of a quick and simple solution.

I'm more concerned that you want to remove a failsafe that you have used in the past to save your engine from 10k+ rpm...?

I have offered to help before but you act like you tune is a big secret , I have the ability to change many things that the PRP does not have so I dont know what to tell you , good luck

yes, peak HP is around 7500RPM. I need to rev past there so when I shift into the next gear, I'm staying near the same HP.

Let's say I drop about 2000 RPM between gears. If I shift at peak HP (213whp), when the revs drop by 2000, I'm only going to have about 140 WHP @ 5500 RPM

If I go past the peak to 8000 RPM, when I shift and it drops to 6000 RPM I'm making 180WHP so my HP is never lower than 180WHP.

Now, about the problem. I have tried eliminating the torque limit by rev and setting them all to 1 with no improvement.

I have pushed the rev limiter as high as 9100 RPM and it still forces the ECU shutdown near the 7800 - 8000 RPM mark. I can't see exactly what is going on with the datalog when it shuts down cause comms with the X3 are shut down abruptly, and the buffer is dumped so the trace ends before the shutdown is recorded......

I have pulled the fuse for the IPK and my original thoughts that this was an IPK issue were wrong, it does the same thing with the IPK offline.

Also, since I have pulled the ABS system out, it's not a shutdown request from the ABS either. SRS is gone too. So unless the GEM is pulling the plug, the ECM is shutting itself off......

What's even more puzzling, is the ECU is not storing and DTC's related to this shutdown event.

My tune is not a big secret, but I'm not prepared for the lectures about every little thing in the tune you do not agree with.

AFR is under control, I'm hitting pretty good power numbers/curve on my own, and it starts and idles OK. I'm not too picky about how the engine runs in the paddock anyway. I just need an answer to this rev limiting issue, because it really makes it hard to go racing when the engine shuts down when the revs peak between shifts.

I'm not worried too much for the short term, this season is almost over, but I need to have this sorted out before next year because I plan on installing a billet crank and spinning the engine up to 8500 on a regular basis.

I'm not looking to remove the rev limiter, I need to know why the ECU is shutting off completely.

Based on my dyno curves, I would ideally want to set redline @ 8500, but I need to install a billet crank for that. (maybe over the winter)

For now, I'm trying to short shift @ 7800, but it's almost impossible to shift at that RPM and not have this ECU power shutdown event.
