Exclamation XCAL-3 Problems?.....Possible Solution.

Problem: This morning while @ FSW i ran into a problem with my XCAL-3. Randy had just changed a file and was wanting me to upload it into the cars computer, but when i turned the key after the XCAL prompted me to, it didnt respond and it stayed on the screen "Turn Key On Dont Start Engine". After unplugging it and trying it again to no avail Randy called SCT support for some advice. They had recommended to pull the fuses for the cooling fan and fuel pump so i did (consult your owners manual for detailed location of fuses). The XCAL responded after i pulled aformentioned fuses and we thought we had the trick down. After a trip around the block doing some datalogging, Randy created a new file and we went to upload that one to the ECU. SAME PROBLEM!!!! Had to pull the 15 AMP to the fuel pump and the 50 AMP fuse to the cooling fan but this time it didnt respond, the same thing happened i was getting no response from the XCAL and it stayed on the screen "Turn Key On Dont Start Engine". Well at this point i was frustrated as was Randy after playing with the car for 1.5 hrs. Moving on...Randy called it quits as he was busy, and i stayed for a bit and played with the XCAL, when i finally got the REAL technique down to getting the files to load everytime. (Proven 5 X's)

Solution: I unplugged the XCAL from the OBD 2 port and turned the key off. I plugged the XCAL back in and turned the key all the way on to the start position (DONT START THE CAR!!) and went to the "Custom Tune" menu, chose the program to upload, and went about doing as the XCAL tuner had asked. While the XCAL is going through its memory screen, turn the key back off and wait for it to say "Turn Key On Dont Start Engine Press Continue" . When it says that, turn the key on, press continue, and the next screen should say "Turn Key Off" DONT TURN IT OFF!! Leave the key on during this step and press "Continue". The next screen should say "Turn Key On Dont Start Engine" at this time the key should be on still right? Well when the screen prompts you to do the above, TURN THE KEY BACK ONE CLICK TO THE ACC POSITION, AND TURN IT RIGHT BACK ON. At this time, the XCAL should recognize the ECU and start uploading your file right away if not try the above again just wait a little bit longer before you turn the key off then back on.

NOTE: All the above was done on a 2005 Focus ZX3 ECU code VBT5.

In order to fix a problem, we have to see the problem. The issue is, not every car does this every time. This only happens on the 05-07 focus making it an even smaller margin. Ask Randy; hell, ask Tom. Some vehicles in this range are perfect and flash EVERY SINGLE TIME. For us to fix the issue we have to get a vehicle in here that has the problem. To say that we are not doing anything about it is incorrect. Yes it has been an ongoing issue for some time but for us, trying to find a focus 05-07 that has the issue local to us is not easy.
