Question In all reality, how feasible would this be? (see content)

Since my state DOES do OBD emissions checking for System Readiness, I've run into a rather large snag with my 302 build. HOW in the world am I gonna pass?? LOL.

So here's what I've been thinking of after I've searched for ways to make my car emissions legal when I get there.

302s were last produced for the 2001 model year Explorers...... IE I'm screwed because I have a 2002 focus. The Explorer I'm pulling it from is a 98, but at worst I order a crate engine, cancel it (or work something out to produce a receipt), and show the receipt. Shouldn't have that issue though.

My next thought was to find some way to reprogram the model year of the explorer's ECU to say it's a 2002, but I know that's likely not possible and probably wouldn't fly for long if it did.

The next thought after that was to use a stand alone or parallel ecu, but I've found no help for that.

NOW my current thought is to use the explorer's ECU to actually run the engine and emissions, but patch in to all of the stuff that the ecu is supposed to monitor and will be read to the station, and have it all connected to my SPI's ecu. In other words, the Explorer ECU is "hidden" so to speak from the OBD system, and what is read is that my "2002 ford focus" is "Emissions Ready"

SO, would this in any way be feasible to do? I don't know exactly how it works anyway so REALLY any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

now my one other thought I just had now..... I guess I could take an 01 SPI ecu if it would make any difference, and PATS would be disabled anyway.

Your over thinking this Mike. You put all the stuff in your car to go with the 302 and have it checked has a 302.

You need to check your states laws on engine swaps.

Yeah I am because I think it has to be same model year or newer And I'm not about to shell out 8k for a crate motor that is just gonna suck anyway.

Any idea on where to find out that info? I've looked and haven't found it.

I think you will find that the rule is simple. If you install an 'older' engine into a 'newer' car, the 'older' engine will have to meet the 'emissions' requirements of the car (by VIN), not the engine.
The single quotes are to call attn to the variables here. (highly simplified example >>) If I have an 'older' engine that does not have EGR as an example, and the 'newer' car originally had it, the 'older' engine will have to get EGR or it will fail. What if I have a 'bigger' HP engine that does have EGR (I.E. power upgrade). Then it should pass. Ditto for if the 'newer' car is OBDII and the engine is OBDI (or none). You would have to modify the engine to >work< with OBDII. This makes potential engine swaps tricky as you can imagine. The reasons are obvious. Also, If you cannot find the particulars on an aspect of car mods in your state web page, then it is almost always safe to assume they just quote and use the DOT(?) federal clean air standards (I.E. the same unless the state changes them). This area can be pretty grey needless to say as states have quite a bit of leeway.
Hope that was what you were looking for.

You can always have the car titled as a kit car that way the emmissions become SOOOOOOOO much easier to deal with.

I don't think he can go the kit car route. New restrictions on them as well, although I cannot find the article/details to substantiate atm. From what I recall, its the same as getting a historic license if the kit car does not meet emissions for the year it was made. I.E. limited miles allowed per year. It's biting the Kit manufacturers as well as they have to fit Cats and such to get them road legal. If I can find the article I will post a link. but again, not quoting absolute fact, but from memory.

EDIT >> "i know thats what a website was doing to ger older skylines over here and legal, they would just send the motor and shell seperate."
About 2 months(?) ago in CA(?), there were about 50 skylines and similar imports seized by the gov. Maybe that was where I picked up the kit car thread?

Yup you guys are on the right track I think.... I finally found a door to my dmvs hidden online info (site fail in other words) and found info about reconstructed vehicles. Their example was "98 ford pickup body put on 97 pickup frame. Vehicle is 98 because that's what it looks like on the outside."

Also it says something to the effect of any major brand make that has been changed from the factory specifications....

So what I need to do is fill out an ownership statement along with the title and receipts for all critical components.

Then then they have to look at it, then I can file for a new vin request, then I have to install the plates/stickers and have it checked over by an official, then I have to file for a new title, then have it inspected and emissions, then finally get it registered.
