87 tune worth it?

i plan on getting the SCT tune pretty soon, so I called up focus sport to ask them some questions. the guy i was talking to pretty much told me that 87 tune wasn't really worth it. he said the car makes the most power on high octane gas and not to waste my money on getting the second tune. guys with the 87 tune, what do you think?

On a focus or any n/a gas vehicle really, you are not going to gain much power with JUST a tune. Where you will gain is in drivability. Overall yes, you will see more of a power increase running higher octane with a tune as the timing can be increased. However, for some, the increases in drivability more than make up for the lack of power increase.

If you have an automatic the tune will be more noticeable even with 87 as shift points and pressures can be tweaked.

when we talk about drivabilty, what are we talking about? the sales rep from Focus Sport said that the 87 tune would increase your rev limiter, and etc...

he pretty much told me that if you want to use 87 octane, it be best just to set the flasher on stock and not waste the money.

Drivability would basically mean the car feeling different. It would be more felt with an automatic though.

I believe gains are almost not noticeable. Im getting an 87 tune solely for when i run out of the $2 extra it'll cost me to fill up, and the cel because of the header. Ill probably never use the 87 tune once i feel what high octane feels like, but it's good to have if u need it. Oh.... Screw FS, Toms tune FTW!

Ok, I am going to chime in here because I just had a damn good experience with Randy @ FS today. I had my car tuned by someone (they are on the east coast) while I was visiting home because they have a good rep with our community. When I got back up here the car didn't adjust to the altitude right and had some issues. There aren't any die hard focus tuners here in CO, so I went with the best person I could find and he did a good job but just couldnt get the idle right. Randy was nice enough to step in and lend a hand to help get my tune finalize. Tuned it remotely and nailed my idle first try. I would def deal with him again. Now with that out of the way....

The deal with running the higher octane is that it will allow you to run a more aggressive tune. Basically, you can run more timing and that will boil down to more power. You can't safely run the same amount of timing on 87 as you can on 93 without the risk of detonation. So I can see where he is coming from.

If you are going to spend the money on a tune, get the one for the higher octane that will net you more gains. The added $2 is a drop in the bucket and I doubt it will break the bank. If you are worried about $2 more in gas costs, you're in the wrong game.
