illinipo's focus tuning 101

It has been brought up in several other threads that we need a place to kind of centralize a lot of the tuning info that is available for the focus. Things pertaining to the ECU and adjustments to the mapping of our cars.

A lot of people know a whole bunch about tuning their cars and they never tell anyone because of the time and effort involved in gaining the knowledge is expensive and the return should be profitable.

However lets go over some general things. How to program with an XCAL, XCAL2, Predator, Megasquirt, PRP, etc. No one has to give up their specific values obviously, but if we can make it a little less scary for people to start datalogging and tuning their own cars we would have more pro's to be able to turn to.

Right now there is a shortage of good "tuners" available. I would first and foremost recommend 1turbofocus aka Turbo Tom aka Tom. What ever he wants just give it to him and let him do his thing. That said, honhon, illinipo, and tons of you guys know a great deal about spark adjustments, transmission fluid pressure adjustments, how to use PRP, how to use the devices previously mentioned, so here is the thread everyone wants and no-one wanted to dare start, and because you volunteered illinipo, its your's....

I will look up the procedure to program the xcal 1. it has been so long since i have used it I do not remember off the top of my head.

edit:

XCAL1
For the Xcal1, all you need to do is plug in the flasher via the OBD2 port, press select until you are on the tune you want to program, hold down the program button for 4 seconds until the lights flash, then turn the key on.

XCAL2

Is much simpler. Plug in via the OBD2 port, scroll to program vehicle, select your tune and program. follow on screen instructions.

Some good advice is to have the car hooked up to a battery charger. if you lose baterry power and your flash gets stopped mid stream your PCM is a paper weight. there are ways to recover it but you need to be a Ford Engineer to do it.

There should also be a disclaimer though, not done by a pro. Or someone double check the info given.
