Finally, Splash Guards On My SVTF
Finally got some splash guards on the car.
And, none too soon with the amount of sand they’re throwing on the roads.
You can see in the pics how beat up the leading edges of the fender lip and side skirts have already gotten.
Unfortunately, the molded guards from Ford will not fit the SVTF due to the side skirts,
and the different rear bumper.
Soooo, this is what I came up with.
Here’s the materials and tools required:
1) 3/8 Drill
2) Phillips Head Screwdriver
3) 7/64 Drill Bit
4) 3/16 Drill Bit
5) #8 X 1/2” Trim Screw (4)
6) #8 X 5/8” Trim Screw (12)
7) 2-Pair Splash Guards of your choice.
I chose the Carquest #82120 "Long Life Duraflex Splash Guards". Cheap, at $6.99 a pair.
Here’s where I drilled the holes in the fender lip and side skirts.
1) I positioned the guard on the car where it should go, and using a dry erase marker,
scribed the outline of the fender on the outside of the guard.
2) I then determined where the best placement for the fasteners would go.
3) I drilled 3/16” holes in the guards themselves, then drilled 7/64” pilot holes in the fender lip.
I fit up and drilled the passenger side guards, then flipped them over on top of the 2 undrilled guards,
and marked where the holes would go for the driver’s side.
That way, I ensured a nice symmetrical fit.
You'll note, there's not much room on the front fender lip,
and IMHO, the fender liner is just too flimsy to attach to.
That's why I went with #8 screws, and the small pilot holes.
The four 1/2" screws were for the above mentioned front fender lip.
All others were 5/8", so they also grabbed a bit of the inner fender liner, and pulled it tight against the lip.
Here’s the installed guards.
Here they are on the car. I’ll have to get you folks a better shot, as they’re hard to see.
All I can say, is I have no fear driving on the sanded roads anymore.
They work quite well, if I do say so myself!
Now, to come up with an attractive way to cover the holes when I take them off in the spring….
cool looks nice
Gotcha beat! Mine say "focus" on them. Aren't I cool [;)] I put em on in Nov when I put on my winter tires. The back ones rest kinda funny don't they? I couldn't get mine to sit square to the car. Oh well. They look cool. Your install is better than mine. I just put two screws in each. I think I mounted mine a little lower too (so it looks more 'rally')
Looks good and very very practical for the all-seasons climate (or more like two seasons, winter and summer) that some of us live in.
Nice writeup man! [thumb]
Yeah, the rears don't quite fit straight, do they?
While I got them to go straight up and down, they angle back at the outer edges.
No way around it with the way the fender is formed.
That's OK, at least it shoots all the debris out to the side.....on unsuspecting motorists.[:D]
Your's are looking pretty good.[thumb]
They do look lower, though not by much.
I'll have to get a better pic. [;)]
Rally Focus club woot woot!
Any SVT owners out there want to part with their disgusting hatch spoiler. Its so ugly you know. You should take it off. I'll dispose of at least one infra-red one for someone.
my question is are they worth it? do they work well?
