Welcome to Focus Fanatics!

I would say to check for obvious things like: body parts that do not belong on the vehicle, check for any warning lamps in the dash, and ask about maintenance (timing belt done?).

They are pretty reliable cars. Seats aren't too bad. Especially if it has the EAP package with the Recaro seats! you might be a little snug in the car, but you should fit. I owned a 2003 sedan and was able to fit wheels and tires in it with no issues, so I am sure you can fit them in the hatch.

Oh yeah the tires will fit. I had a full set of wheels and a full set tires in my hatch before, just flip the rear seats forward.

I have a hatch and I remember I had four tires maybe five (215/17), and a spare tire for disposal. Plus I had one seat left in the back!

You can definitly fit all four wheels in the back of the hatch. I did with my wheels, they're not 17's but still the same height.

I don't have a picture, but I can fit my AutoX 16s with 225/50 tires, 2 sets of tool bags, my jack, my spare, 4 chairs and still have room to have a single passenger in the back and comfortable driving and riding for my front passenger and myself.

The MK1 focuses (SVT Focus / 01-04 Focuses) have plenty on room in the hatchback cars. Even feel we have more room than the other models still.

I just went through this when I bought mine, here's the stuff i checked out. The thermostat housing likes to leak, clutch master cylinder leaks, I also like to run my finger along the bottom of the door under the black molding looking for rust, check the back hatch for rust as well. If it is not at a dealership I would ask if the timing belt has been done as well. Good luck, I just scored a 03 with 20k on it
