High mileage STs? How long will it live?

I'll be picking up a 2nd vehicle within the next year, as my daughter will be getting her license in January 2018 (gawd help us all...). At that point, she will inherit my DD/hockey bus 2012 Mazda 5.

Between a long commute (70+ miles round trip) and two kids playing travel sports (hockey/softball/baseball), I tend to roll up the miles. Last year I put 28K on the Mazda in 10 months; that should come down a bit if I split it between vehicles, but I'll still be over-average use.

I'm considering a Focus ST for a couple reasons - big enough to take at least 1 kid + hockey gear, fun to drive, decent gas mileage, and the chance to have my kids learn to drive a standard. I'm a bit leery that the blown motor may be a weak point considering the mileage I put on. FWIW, I tend to shoot for 150-200K on my vehicles before getting a new one.

Anything I should be concerned with on a Focus ST?

Many thanks for any input!

My 4 year old ST has 60k miles on it. The only issue I've had was a 2nd gear syncro pre-maturely wearing out. But this was only common with "AB" transmission parts (2013 and early 2014 production) and not with "AC" transmission parts (2014 and later). If the car has made it to 100k without the issue (on an "AB" transmission) I wouldn't worry about it.

Motor is pretty bulletproof so I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks, I'm really leaning that way. My son will start driving in 4 years, so he may inherit the ST down the road. Or he and his sister can throw down over who gets what car :)

If you're going to pound miles on a car I'd just get a 5 speed SE that nicely equipped and save money and get a tad better MPGs plus with a turbo it is just another thing that can fail.

My old car is for sale at this dealer. It was well maintained, just a couple minor accidents causing front fender damage both times.

^^^mods may be nice for some as desired, but those don't add any reliability.

I don't consider it a monetary loss to supplement driving experience and happiness with certain mods. It's a cost benefit analysis in technical economics terms atleast. I know I am losing money by doing exhaust etc (or atleast not adding value to the car at all), but if I get more intrinsic value from driving it on a daily basis, then winning.

^^^ That works too - I was just disagreeing on those as longevity improvements.

May not hurt either, but def. won't improve. Gotta look close at each for benefits vs. potential issues.
