Trade In

I've got a 2014 SE with 72,000 miles, and the local dealer has a 2015 ST with 13,xxx for $21,xxx. If I could get the price right, and get a payment nearly identical to mine (I owe $10,400) I'd trade up. Problem is, I have a salesman friend who told me a 2015 SE with 32,xxx was valued at 7,000 the other day. So I don't see it even coming close to doable!

Trade in values make me sick. There is no way your car is only worth $7,000.

Ya but trading in is a convenience for you. You could sell private party and get more but being 10k+ in the hole already I think you will only come out ahead a grand or so. While I agree trade in values are kind of low, remember that the buyer is going to sell the vehicle and turn a profit. They also very greatly depending on the area.

My 2013 ST is supposedly worth $15,000 with 60,000 miles I doubt a dealer would give me more than $13,000

Supply and demand + starting MSRP have a lot to do with value.

My car with the options/cond and 122K miles is:

trade in - 3,300-4,200
sell to a private party - 5,500

That makes me sad too. Best of luck OP!

Dont forget the dealer needs to make money on deal. Thats why you get Less than its worth. Try to make a deal on payments. Cant hurt to try.

High mile cars are not very valuable as trades, since they aren't desirable on the lots.

Once you go significantly over the 12k/yr mark considered average use, only a few private buyers will consider them. The 'Hwy. miles' explanation doesn't hold with the average buyer.

Look at your examples, even though a different model it's comparing one 2015 with 13k vs. one with 32k. Most would think of that as comparing a one year old with a three year old car. Your 2014 is a six year old car by mileage at 72k, so it's value drops a lot more than average - and average trades aren't good to start with.
