What is the Material Lining the Rear Fender Wells?

It's similar to a pressed felt material and all it does is soak up dirt and salt water. Today was 55* in the mitten and I was able to de-salt the car. I sprayed those fender liners for 15 minutes each and there was still dirt coming from the material. This spring I'll remove them and clean up behind them as well. It appears to trap moisture which is a rust problem waiting to happen.

What is this stuff, a sound deadener? What's the point?

I'd prefer molded plastic like the fronts...which I can clean.

You could always fab the fronts to somewhat fit the back.

Less cash for the manufacturer to use that material vs molded composite.

You'll never get them clean of dirt. I regularly soak them in water (by holding the hose on) and soap all summer (when I wash) and still dirty brown and black water comes out of them when I spray them after. They basically absorb all the dirt they can, and will never come clean. I'm sure my mud-flaps don't help as they keep the dirty snow packed up there all winter.

My Corvette has some sort of hybrid felt/plastic liners that seem to work well, so not all felt type liners have this issue it seems. But that car doesn't get driven in Winter, which is where most of the dirt probably comes from.

Yeah, keeping it quiet in the cabin is the purpose.

Haven't ever seen any reports of rust issues resulting, and it's been used since '99 in these cars.

The porosity lets water dry out of it like lightning.
