How Many of You Use 1st Gear?

Except for an uphill start I primarily use 2nd gear to get going from lights.
Takes a wee bit more feathering on the clutch and I'm not riding it either...

I usually start in 2nd gear, to 3rd to 5th and of course 6th to cruise along.
Down shifting I skip 5th and go from 6th to 4th to 2nd.

All bets are off if the car next to me wants to for a run to the next light.
I'll run the entire gear box.

Anybody else tried this given the short gear ratios?

Doesn't sound real fun for your clutch...
Are you engine braking a lot?

I engine brake often. I replaced the clutch once a couple months after I got the vehicle. Idk what happened, someone else was driving. The disk was dust. I can't say engine braking (down shift to slow down) doesn't wear down on the disk or adjacent parts but I can say in the years its been since then I haven't had to perform any repairs to the transmission other then the pin that goes into the shift tower.

@op. I use 1st gear though our cars aren't the same. And usually I am the first one to move once the light turns green. Guess what you've described is your own driving style.

From a stop.. (on level ground or uphill at all) no way. First gear is there for stops.
If I am moving.. even only a few mph.. Yeah, no problem to get going in second gear.

It is true first gear is rather short. but for a small displacement engine without a bagful of idle torque... The first gear is good off the line.
I would never use second from a full stop.
Aside from the extra wear on the clutch, the action of starting from second gear also is hard on the engine.. Lugging it constantly.

IMO it is the OP's clutch and motor, and he can do what he wants with it. Not for me though.
