Hard to tell....

If you can dump the clutch in first and second requires slipping it to get going, that's the definition of adding unnecessary wear to the clutch.

The rest of the gears require no slip if speeds are matched.

This is how I drive to and from work in contained stop and go traffic.

If I'm running around up north where there some nice corners, I'll pop the revs up to transition from 5th to 4th (etc.) to avoid the engine trans strain and I'll drop down through the gear box, not 2, 4, 6 or 6, 4, 2.
I never get that damn upshift arrow which I think is ridiculous anyway...
ok...... what about1,3,5?

The gear numbers are just suggestions by Ford anyway...I enjoy starting in 6th. Do you think that is why I lose all my off the line races against 10 speed bikes?

I start out in second occasionally. Usually occurs when I am slightly distracted talking while driving and forget to go back to first. If it isn't a downhill grade I will quickly grab first because second in the 170hp, 3700lb Outback from a stop is not fun...

I use 1st all the time from a stand still.

Using 2nd in this car from a stop is murder on the clutch. I have to slip the hell out of it if I try to start in second.

This^^^^^Thats why the manufacture put 1st in for. They for sure could of saved some coin if they deleted 1st gear.
