I live on the California coast, so fortunately it rare gets below 50f. I just won't visit my Tahoe house in the winter any more...

In general the ability of a tire to grip the road in the wet is mostly a function of the tread compound and the tread pattern only comes into play when there is standing water on the road surface.

This is why high performance summer tires that look more like slicks work so much better than all season tires on wet roads. It is the tread compound they that allows them to grip a wet road surface.

If you plan on driving in cold weather ONLY, then you'll be okay with the occasional jaunt on the summer tires. You will have much decreased grip though. If you'll be seeing any snow though...don't run the OEM summers at all. Get a set of cheap wheels with all seasons to switch on before you make the trip. They'll handle the occasional snow and cold fine.

As someone living in a cold climate please take my advice. I've driven in the cold/snow on summer tires, all seasons, and snow tires. They all have their place and all are dangerous in the wrong conditions. A $30k car is not worth losing over $1k in wheels/tires.
