Unhappy I Don't Trust My ST Internals Anymore..... HELP

Hey guys, I have a 2013 focus ST and I bought it with about 30k miles on it. The guy before me had stage 2 bolt ons stock turbo and had a pro-cal tune on it. A couple weeks after the tune he lost compression in all 4 cylinders and found out that, according to the ford tech, the rings failed. So the owner was able to get a brand new long block. Put it in and took everything off of it to sell. So this is when I bought it. I put a ford racing cat back exhaust, ford racing lowering springs, and ford racing short throw shifter on it. Then I bought a brand new Pro-cal tuner from ford performance, I put it on and less than a week later I had a ring fail during autocross, and it took out the bottom side of the number 1 piston. So it was under warranty because the tuner was installed by ford with a warranty. So I got a new short block and took the tune off and threw it in the trash.

I'm scared to do anything to this car now. If anyone has any input that might help me overcome my fear please help. Thanks.

Well, the guys with broken engines all had tunes.IF you toss the tune then I would think the engine will be OK.
Are you still going to race it?
If so, maybe time for a different car.
If no more racing, then with no tune, the engine should putter along forever... Just like all the stock ST are doing
So as a daily driver, your third block will last IMO.

So whats the deal w/ the rings? & ringlands/piston's? Sounds very similar to the sti motors.

I'd be looking at the pistons/ringlands & rings. Sounds very similar to the ej257's. Ppl IK upgrade the pistons in sti's.

I'd be looking at aftermarket pistons/rings that work.

Moved to the ST performance and engine section to help keep our forum more organized and deleted the duplicate thread you made.

Moved this to ST Ecoboost Performance for you, better spot for info. than the DIY repair section of General Tech Chat.

There's an LSPI (Low Speed Pre Ignition) issue with all turbo GDI engines that's still not fully understood, it can even strike stock engines at some odd times like relatively low acceleration under cruise control when you hit a hill - low engine RPM seems to be the common factor.

There's some good reading in this section on tuning and issues you can look at.

Your engine can do wacky high torque from low RPM, in fact it's limited in the stock tune for lower gears. Don't know if it "solves" it, but I've seen some posts recommending higher RPM use for acceleration to hopefully avoid the random issue of LSPI (don't use all the grunt avail from extremely low RPM).
