With these ecoboost engines, I would not want to be at the mercy of the judge.

The point is too many people add performance parts without thought and expect Ford, GM, and etc to pick up the tab if the engine fails.

So as a daily driver and some "spirited" driving from time to time should I leave it alone or maybe a drop in K&N or other type of drop in filter and call it good, or......?

Aftermarket intercooler sounds tempting too later on down the road.....

The comment about the engine already (to paraphrase) "a high state of tune, and any aftermarket tune will be using 'crude' methods to gain a few HP and may break the engine."
I have to agree any two liter engine making 252HP is IN 'a high state of tune' already. (I remember when 100HP per liter was a huge deal)

Another point is the company (Ford, or the dealer) can say no, your broken thing is not covered. You can yell all day and night that they 'HAVE' to cover it blah blah blah.. In the end, you would have to pay a lawyer to go to court to fight it.
(NO lawyer is going to take your case on a contingency) The company will have $$$ lawyers to squash you like a bug. If you win, the company will appeal. And you still have nothing except way bigger lawyer bills than the repair would have been.
So YES car companies can refuse you for any reason they want. AND, yeah you can go to court and fight, if you have plenty of money to burn.

So generally intake and exhaust are usually OK.

I WOULD like to own the tool pictured earller with the six partitions having temps and boost/vacuum.. It is used to do tunes.. but just for the gauges shown it would be way cool. (I don't know if it is $500 cool though!)


Anyway my fantasy parts are a Vortech intercooler (so I can keep the shutter system) And just to avoid as much heat soak (which the Vortech has been proven to greatly reduce)
A PCV catch can for the crankase to intake, and one for the crankcase to intake valve area.
The K&N free flow air cleaner I already have.
The MBRP cat back exhaust. (just for the sound)
The Ford Racing short throw shifter.
And the COBB accessport V3 (as I wrote, just for the gauges which can be shown) Probably overkill on cost. but very nice to have the info IMO.

Me, too. It would be so much fun to take an ST (and maybe a 2015 Mustang GT 5.0) back 50 years in a time machine. Wouldn't the stuff that everyone takes for granted these days blow everyone's minds back then?

Sure would.
I knew a guy who did a variety of amateur racing in a souped up Corvair way back when I was in high school. . I would like to let HIM, back then, take the ST for a spin.

Most cars use a single MAF since it's sufficient on a N/A motor.

What I don't understand is why Ford decided to go with 3 sensors.

I have an aftermarket turbo kit on my track car and the MAF got replaced by a single MAP. The I/C is also quite a bit bigger than the Focus' one and looking at the logs (AEM4 EMS) my IAT never goes beyond 70 which is really good. I would have expected that from a water-to-air I/C

The issue I have with the 3 sensors is that instead of having a single point of failure, the car has 3. Doesn't seem too efficient, especially when you consider how fragile a MAF is. I had a CAI on my track car before I installed the turbo kit and my MAF went to crap after a few months

Has there been any real world or dyno testing of the stock intercooler vs. aftermarket. Cause as far as i can see it the price does not equal enough of an improvement to me. If you are using the stock turbo and just have a tune i do not think it will be worth ripping your car apart possibly ruining clips and other things just to say i have a bigger intercooler than yours. They seem to build plenty of power on the stock cooler. Now if you were gonna put a giant turbo on there and large injectors, bigger throttle body and air flow meter then maybe.

If you've read through the intercooler datalog threads on FocusST.org you would understand the criticality for using an aftermarket intercooler if you want to run anything more aggressive than a "stage 1" calibration (Air filter only/stock car), but even on a stage 1 or stock vehicle calibration if you monitored the charge air temperatures you'd see a large increase in temperature after even just one full throttle pull through third or fourth gear.

When the charge air temperature increases the air becomes less dense and the car has to pull timing and loses power.

A more effective intercooler keeps the charge air temperature closer to ambient, which helps the car maintain it's power level safely.

The stock intercooler is barely adequate and allows for 100 F+ degree rise in charge air temperatures over the ambient temperature.

If you never plan on driving the car aggressively, or maybe only one or two pulls with a long time to allow it to cool back off then perhaps you may want to save the money, but otherwise even on a completely stock car having an improved intercooler provides additional safety by lowering the charge air temperatures.

The intercooler itself does not give more power, but it lowers the charge air temperature by pulling the heat out of the compressed air and allows you to use the power you will generate longer.
