Tom - Tranny questions

Hello Tom,

I have some questions for you reguarding putting a turbo kit on my
car. I have a 03 zx3 with auto tranny. I was thinking of just
getting a Lentech tranny rated to 275 hp. Other than just
getting another tranny, is there anything that I can do to
keep using just the stock auto tranny. I know i have options
out there, such as, different valve body, different torque converter
and such. Are the parts listed going to be able to handle the power
that I plan on putting on the Focus?

If I can save 3 grand by not buying the tranny I could use it
to take my car directly to you.

You could always spend about $800-$1000 on a getrag out of a wrecked SVT. Which is probably about what you would pay to beef up the Auto. All you would have to do is take it out and drop it in. The twin layshaft design of the six speed makes it the same length as the regular focus transmissions, as opposed to regular six speeds which are longer. While I was at it I would get the solid CV shafts too. They are like 13% stronger than the stock focus ones. Just a thought.

The ATX to MXT isnt just a drop in job , wiring , ECU , starter etc

The stock axles are solid and will hold over 500 HP

Agreed that it isn't just a "drop in". To rectify what I meant by saying "drop in", I meant that it is a lot cheaper than lets say ordering a transmission for 3 grand. Furthermore, as far as an ECU goes when a turbo is ordered from tom, isn't the ECU supplied if you get the full kit? That covers that part and the starter could come out of the car you are getting the getrag from. As far a wiring goes you can get fresh harnesses from many places on the web for a reasonable price. All in all I believe it would be a good setup. Like I said in my last post, it is just a thought, I am not telling anyone to do anything. The modifications you do to your vehicle are something that you have to live with. So I would do what would make the most sense for you and make you happiest. Usually a heaver pocket means a happier guy. :)

Used Trans 500
Quaife 620
Quaife install 250
Clutch 469
Alum Fly 325
ECU 150
Wiring harness to make the spedo work 100

Thats over 2400.00 right there , Not much of a savings from 3000 and just stick it all back togather , not counting all the labor for the change

I would use the MTX-75 over the getrag for a turbo anyday

But i understand what your saying

Yea I wasn't trying to be difficult or question your judgement, I just like to throw ideas around just like many do. It is nice to hear from more than one person and to have more than one option. Of course I would rather do the labor myself, so that is why I would take the used tranny route.

P.S. I will sell my getrag for $250! ROFL J/K
