Cams and boost?

just looking to get a little insight from the master. im seriously starting the build on my daily driver and my power goal is in the neighborhood of 230-280hp with a supercharger. im going with a supercharger because it seems like they are a little friendlier on daily drivers. ill be doing a full build up on the engine with forged rods and pistons (what compression would you suggest?) possibly a knife edge crank, basically a bullet proof bottom end that i could comfidently put 20psi to with a turbo and not worry. im going for complete overkill as far as the strength of the engine goes with hopes of better reliability and making it last as long as i own the car with no catastrophic failures. just looking for any suggestions you might have for an excellent daily driver to get me in that power range and be tough enough that i can beat on it every few days and not worry about it blowing up in my face.

my biggest question is what cams would you suggest that are best with boost in that power range? would those same cams do well on a N/A engine? im getting the head work done soon but i cannot decide what cams to get or whether i should get all out turbo cams and use another stock head until i get my hands on a supercharger. im looking at doing all of this for around $5-6000 not including tuning. ill be doing all of the labor myself except for any machine work obviously. i wont be using a CGI block, would love to have it but its just not in the budget. what do you think? i also will be spraying a little nitrous to it occationally. only at the track once every few weeks or months. what is your experience when it comes to nitrous when mixed with boost? the nitrous wont be to get me to my power goal. it will simply be there to put me just a tiny bit over the top. it wont be anything bigger than a 50-75 shot thats for sure. im not including the nitrous in my budget as i already have it.

anyway sorry for rambling. i just started this with the purpose of asking about cams and now ive practically written a book. any advice positive or negative is welcome as long as any negative is constructive! thanks tom!

N/A you up the compression
FI turbo and SC you lower the compression.
Wait until you have all the parts then build it
Tom got an new motor for 6500/6800 and its got all the parts you need

i know that you want lower compression for forced induction with the limit being around 9:5:1 and lower. also as much as i would like to snag that motor from tom and just be done with it, it just isnt as much fun as putting it together yourself. i would probably sleep better at night knowing who put it together but i like doing it myself. i wont touch anything to do with transmission work except clutch jobs (too much like brain surgery) but motor work is something i love doing. also this isnt going to be an all at once build. it is going to be a 1 step at a time thing with the supercharger being close to last. im getting the head done up because a buddy of mine just got a job at a local machine shop and has offered to do the work for nothing if i hook him up with a clutch job on his miata which ive done a few times in the past and its a breeze.

EDIT: another reason i like doing this 1 step at a time is because when you replace 1 part at a time if you should have a problem with the car due to a new faulty part or just incorrect installation you know it can only be that 1 thing. if you do it all at once its harder to diagnose a problem. or maby im just a novice partially on the obama plan who can only afford 1 thing at a time and when i get new pretties i cant stand for them to sit for more than a day or two.

The statement "a supercharger because it seems like they are a little friendlier on daily drivers." Is just BS a turbo will do just as well and in my opinion better because a turbo isnt dragging down the engine even at cruise

Next time I am in town you need to come and take a ride in a Turbocharged Focus its just crazy to do a SC , I would get the Turbo on now set to about 210HP then start building up the engine for more boost

but what cams would you suggest because im getting the head work in the next few weeks. the offer wont be on the table forever. i suppose i could just leave the stock cams in there but i hate to do that since im going to have the head off anyway.

i definately know turbo is way way faster and better and more efficient than a SC. it just seems like superchargers arent as tempermental. however i value your opinion in this area more than my own, and thats saying something. and with that said, so long as i can fit it in my budget and still get the internal work done ill go with turbo instead. it would actually make more sense to do it that way because then i can reach my power goal easier and with less boost than it would take to reach with a SC.

but what would you suggest for cams??

Like Tom said, stock cams are the best for boost. If you really want to go aftermarket though, I've heard the crane stage 1s do pretty good.

For boost, you want high lift, short duration cams. Although, I have pondered if it would be beneficial to go with stage 2 or stage 3 radical cams w/ adjustable sprockets and just adjust the cams w/ each other so the longer duration doesn't overlap. I think it would sound and feel sick running loppy as hell. Of course, if there wouldn't be any performance gains, there wouldn't be a point to doing it, but just a thought.
