RWD or AWD conversion ideas

has anyone considered using a 1993-1997 ford ranger with an I4 they come both RWD and 4X4 the wheel base is only like 4 to 5 inches longer so all you may have to do is get a custom length driveshaft installed. im pretty sure that the motors are just zetec so it should all bolt up together. RIGHT?

um i'd assume that the tranny placement on the awd/rwd is different, and you'd have to do alot of cutting and custom work to make it work.

the first problem i see is that our cars have transversly mounted engines, the second problem is that 4x4 is different from AWD, my understanding is that older 4WD systems shouldnt be left on when on dry pavement, because it will chew up your transfer case, newer 4wd systems can be left on on dry pavement but are inefficient when compared to AWD, with AWD there is no manual choice, the vehicles computer senses variences in road conditions and transfers power where it is needed. a better swap would be the escape, which has been mentioned on here a few bagillion times..but if you decide to do it make sure you do a write up

It's a good idea..but probably more work than you'd ever want to do.

well i will check on it but RWD would fit ill just have to get a hold of a ranger RWD and look at specs... i know ill need a custom driveshaft... wheelbase is defferent like 4 or 5 in so ill be lookin for one... tranversely mounted motors can be remounted like for the v8 swap... cradles or mounts it can be done... ill keep posted.

I know there'sd an easy way for us Duratec guys, the Jaguar X-Type has the same tranny as the D23, an MTX-75, but the X-Type is AWD, and all you'd need to do it, is find a crashed one for all the components. There'd be a lot of modding required, but easier to say the least.

okay....let's clear up some things here.

A - 93-97 rangers have a "Lima" 2.3. totally different engine.
B - AWD vehicles have some sort of coupling that allows different wheel speeds at each corner and each end of the car. 4x4 transfer cases do not, except in "some" semi-part-time/full-time 4x4 applications when it functions like an AWD (a la grand cherokee)
C - if you were dead set on it, you MAY be able to use a tranny from a 98+ 2wd 4 cylinder ranger, as the newer body style used a duratec motor...IF you had a duratec focus/motor...

bottom line? no AWD from ranger stuff....RWD, maybe...but no AWD...

you CAN buy an AWD version of the MTX-75, but it's a dogbox and worth like 12 grand....

OR find a wrecked Mazda speed 6... I'm willing to bet that would work as well...
