Lsd???

In pricing out my turbo set-up I am having trouble deciding if I want to get an LSD or not. Don't get me wrong, I want to do this right and I will get one at some point, but you throw that in with the turbo, clutch, flywheel, and labor and that is a substantial chunck of change.

So my question is...how much trouble am I going to have hooking up if I'm putting down around 200-220hp? I have high quality rubber 215 width, will that help at all, or will that just make it more expensive when I roast them? Also, how bad is the torque steer with the turbo, are we talking Saab rip the wheel out of your hand strong or what?

Anyone who has experience with this let me know, I want to do the LSD eventually but I want to know if I can get by without it for a little while. Then I am also wondering how much I would save on labor if I got the diff installed while I was replacing the clutch, prob a good bit cheaper doing them together.

I couldn't hook up when I was basically stock and spraying a 75 shot, much less with 200ft/lbs of torque... You'll definitely need to get a diff and you can get by without it, but don't really get into it when taking off. You'll end up spinning if you're putting the power to the ground with one wheel. If you installed the diff/fly/clutch yourself you'll probably save several hundred bucks.

At this point my game plan is to go with the HiBoost kit, Clutchmasters stg3, Fidanza flywheel and prob drive up and have Tom install it all and tune it this summer if he's up for it.

Later I would like to get new rods+pistons and an LSD, retune it and up the boost to about 15-17psi. Ideally I would like to end up just north of 250-260hp when its all said and done. This on a 05 SE that should have less than 20k miles on it when I install the turbo. I know its a long way off but I just can't help thinking how much fun this car would be with that kind of power. It's my reward to myself for finishing the first year of grad school lol.

You guys think that sounds like a pretty solid set-up, am I leaving anything big out of this?

I run the Quaife and I still have traction problems in 1st, 2nd and 3rd... on rainy days it'll smoke 4th as well.

I had 231whp in my SVT running a modest tune at 12psi - no LSD and I had fairly worn hankooks RS2's (auto x tire). I spun 1st pretty bad...ok, it was usless; 2nd gear id spin a little but itd hook eventually, 3rd it just pulled. No massive torque steer either.

I'll let you know how no LSD +~320whp feels soon!

If you put the LSD in at the same time as the clutch/flywheel you'' save $500 to Re-open trans case to go back inside.
I'd consider doing the clutch/LSD 1st,that way you can take advantage of posi untill you boost.
Torque steer, not with the Quaife. Not by the true definition anyway. With 300 hp the car wants to go the direction the wheels are POINTED.

I wouldn't count a LSD as something you only need if you're going to be running forced induction...as far as I'm concerned, equipped with a LSD is how the car should come from the factory. I'm N/A with a few bolt-ons and transmission work (4.06 gears, flywheel and LSD) and out of all of my mods I think the Quaife is the one that I would hang on to if someone made me get rid of all of my mods except for one. And yes, if you're going to have the transmission out put it in...even if you're doing it yourself dropping the transmission is a major pain in the ass.

I have a similar question... I'm planning on going either S/C or Turbo within a year.

My goal is only around 180 - 200 whp to start with. Maybe more eventually.

Can I run on a stock clutch/diff. with the lower HP for a while?

Eventually i'd like to upgrade the clutch/diff but with the cost of doing a turbo up right, i'd like to hold off on the diff and clutch for a while and just run lower boost....

or should I just buy a s/c and call it good?

You can...the clutch should last for a decent amount of time depending on your driving habits, especially if you're only going to hit the 180 WHP range. I wouldn't pass on the differential however...all the power in the world isn't going to do anything if you can't get it to the ground efficently. Like I was saying, the LSD is a great addition even if you're N/A with a few bolt-ons like I am. However...if you're going to drop the transmission for one you might as well do the other at the same time.
