Question hello jay uk overheating issue

Hi All I am new to the site and this is my first post so here goes:

I recently purchased a 57 reg 1.8 tdi focus driving back home on the motor way all was fine, but when driving locally after an hour or so once I turn the car off it wont start strait way, The fan starts up and a warning on the dash says the engine is overheating but the temp gauge was in the middle the whole time? also checked the heaters and they are blowing out hot air as normal what I found odd was the fan only worked once I have stopped I have never heard the fan start when driving only once I have stopped and it wont start. I also drove to the airport and back with no problems but driving around town I get this problem. also today I am now even more confused as I went to work and after the car would not start but that may be down to the battery run down from the fan only working once the ignition is in position 1 and the engine is not running??

Any advise or help is much appreciated
