Finding a mechanic!

Ok, I'm in a new city and I'm looking for a mechanic or a shop. What are some of things I should look for, or ask?

I'm trying also figure out where to start in trying to learn more about cars, mainly dealing with the Ford Focus. Any reading or web reccomendations on gaining more knowledge in this area as well?

Well, If you plan on modding your car with stuff like bolt-ons, suspension components, and even the superchargers on the market the installs are fairly straightforward and you can do yourself and maybe with the help of a friend to make it a little easier if thats why your looking for a mechanic. And another thing is look in the phone book to find some shops around your area but I would suggest taking a trip to their place and checking out their operation and make sure they do good work before you let them do anything to your car. And as far as learning more about the focus youve come to the right place there are many helpful people and tons of information on this site, and car mags also help with learning about cars in general. hope this helps.

Thanks ZETEC3 for the advice. In general, I'm living in an apartment, so have no access to tools or anything. If I go to a shop, are there things that may indicate quality service or a hack job?
For example, I just got my Focus tinted at a shop that 'looked' legit. The guy was certified, and showed me some tint jobs on other cars. Well, so far I've brought my car back 3 times to have the tint redone, my Focus is 3 wks old and I haven't been able to roll down the windows yet!
I don't know how to determine a good shop from a bad shop! Lol.

Kicknzx3:

1. In this region there are a total of 27 threads, 3 from Feb, and mine makes 2 in March. This regional forum is DEAD.

2. The question asked was not a regional question. I'm looking for common things ppl look for when searching for a mechanic or shop. For example, if you were looking for an independant computer reseller, I would reccomend looking for specific industry certifications like MCSE, CCNA, A+. I'd also look at who they reccomend and why, AMD vs Intel or Cyrix, ect. I'm sure there are some particulars that good shops/mechs follow, and some traits that bad shops/mechs have as well.

The post, So can cops do this??? CA only really..., is more regional oriented and is still in the main forum. What gives!?

Oh well, thanks for the bump into a black hole.
