Talking Moving to Chattanooga area.

Hey Ya'll I'm moving from Cape Cod MA to Chattanooga area in mid september. I was wondering if anyone could give me a heads up of what to expect down there. Do you have inspection stickers, if so what are the criteria to pass? Also I still have to find houseing and a mechanic job (10 years experience). Right now I have been rebuilding tracktor trailers for the last 2 years on fleet service I've enjoyed that.

Any advice on where to live (I have 2 large dogs) or not to live (bad area) or which companies to stay away from for work (bad place) or to apply to (need a good mechanic) would be greatly appreciated. When I get there I will have all my tools and would gladly meet/help anyone. I can fix or rebuild anything except woman and I am ase certified in T4,5,6. And I am a wiz with computers and wiring.

Thanks in advance for all the advise.
Rock

Hey buddy well i think your gonna like this town! Esp with the VW plant and amazon. My advice would be to apply there or J.miller industries they build tow trucks. Theres also a lot of VW distributors. This town is a very walkable city and it has everything i need. No its not ATL but its close to there nash knox and huntsville. Tags here are 25 bucks plus 10 dollar inspection if you live in the city limits and no state income tax! As far as where to live I say stay away from the congested parts like brainerd/east brainerd. Ootewah is very nice and so is cleveland and its not far from chatt. Maybe 30 min at most. I live in red bank which is also not a bad area and im close to walmart and downtown. Theres also Soddy Daisy which is a lil more country and Hixson which is not far from Soddy. I def would drive around a little bit first. Stay away from bonny oaks area and hwy 58 . Bad crime area and break ins. One thing with chatt is its an older city so a lot of older homes and apartments but its nice and you can def fix that up. If u ever have questions holler or PM me. Ive been here 3 years and lived in ATL for 18 and wont go back there. This feels like home and so much to do here esp in the spring and summer

I'm not a plant working kinda Guy. I enjoy doing different stuff all the time. But thanks for the info.

As for the inspections what is required are they like MA just plug in to OBD and go, don't even open the hood? Or is it like Cali "That airbox has been modified YOU FAIL!!!!!"
Where do I have to live to not need one I was thinking of getting a full racing header but don't want any major issues.

Thanks for the location ideas. We were thinking redbank/soddy Red bank gets a lot of bad publicity but that could just be haters. As far as driving around well I have to rent before I get there and then move down there to the new rental. I'd been watching Craigslist for ideas.
Thanks for all the info if you ever need something just hit me up. I can diagnoise and fix anything. And I'm briinging my home shop and tool boxes with me.

Soddy Daisy is nice, I had a friend who lived there. He also lived in Red Bank right off Signal Mtn. I don't know if he'd recommend that area or not, but if you live light you might be ok. I live in a really bad part of Memphis which is a super high crime city that overcomes even Baltimore in the latest statistics- yet I haven't had a problem, and I have thousands in tools outside my house in a van. I just don't look like I have anything.

If you can find a place, living off 127 outside Chatty is excellent country. The way the roads are set up now, it doesn't take too long to get to Chat either.

Well idk if headers will pass or not. They do that plug in thing to the OBD and thats hamilton county. As far as soddy and cleveland they dont do that. Red bank is where i live and its reasonable but u have to look around. I live off a road called mountain creek road aka apartment row and its convenient to downtown and hixson. Soddy is more country and a lil bit further out but cheaper to live. Cleveland and ootewah is up and coming thanks to the VW plant and its also close to downtown and to the mall. I found my apt on Craigslist so thats a good place to look

What exactly is hamilton county? I hear that alot. I'd been looking at red bank and soddy daisy. want countryish single family. Most of the work I've been looking at is over in that corner of Chattanooga. I'm really intrested in the train depots. Thinking of applying to be a Locomotive Diesel Repairman. You have 3 train repair facilities in Chattanooga only place in the country with 3. If not then mabey Tractor trailer repair like I do now or nichols fleet equipment. And I have been looking at craigslist for houses for rent.

Good luck with the railroads. If you get on, that's the best wage-earner job there is, and you won't have to worry about being bored. From what I understand, all positions are rotated at some point, but that might not apply to diesel mechanics or electricians, such as myself. It's something to ask when you interview if there are jobs available. If there are not jobs available now- keep checking. RR workers pay no Soc Sec as RR pensions were in place before SS. They still have pensions too- like back from the day when employers took care of their employees after many years of faithful service.

Are you an electrician or a train electrician? and ya the trains start off low pay but they go up to a descent pay rate and I hear about the pensions being one of the best in the country. Right now I'm the #2 mechanic of a trucking company of like 130 trucks and 110 trailers and 20 forklifts so I stay busy. This week alone Clutch last night, injectors the night before, I do all the wiring work, Busy busy busy. it's been 12-13/hr days all week.

Howdy!! Lol thats just wrong. Good choice on the move I just happen to live in Soddy Daisy and grew up in the Soddy-Chatt area. I have done ALOT of traveling and have found this to be home. Very family friendly, housing is relatively cheap as are land taxes. I have a small family and this area suits us just fine. Hit me up here or txt me I would be glad to talk with ya.
