Lightbulb project AWD focus

before anyone reading this decides to flame me for this idea, i have actually looked into this a bit........I am looking into seriously attempting to build an AWD turbo focus. it will be a two step process......step one being getting it just to an AWD n/a setup driveable, once accomplished i will build it up and boost it. Now.....first thing i am going to need to do is locate a totalled escape from 2001-early2003 in the XLS 4wd trim model, as this is a zetec powerplant that was available in 5spd manual and 4wd. i would need the computer, the tranny and 4wd drivetrain, and all the buttons/controls for the 4wd system. I went to a dealer and looked underneath, and the rear pumpkin setup is actually very compact and i think it would fit very well by simply ditching the spare tire well in the hatch. so the only problem there is rear suspension........in which case i am going to contact kugelkomponents about their kit for the 5.0 swap foci to see if they think it will work with my idea. i already have the SCT pro racer package, so i would just have to find out if that will work on the escape compueter as well, i dont see why it wouldnt. now, if i cannot find the zetec 4wd, i know the newer escapes for 06 have the duratec setup the same way, so i may end up going that route if the software would work on that as well, and as long as in either setup the engine is mounted sideways as it is in the focus. so if anyone knows at least that information that would give me a really quick yes or no answer on if it is possible.

what does everyone think??

That would be absolutely amazing. I wanted to do this as well, however i have no money for the project. Hell i can barely afford my insurance. As long as you have the cash for the project (and the time, AND knowledge), i dont see why you wouldnt be able to do this. Good luck my friend, and keep us updated, this will be a very interesting project.

Hell yeah! If you can get the setup to feasibly work AND run, you're going to be able to build one monster Focus. Tom might be able to give you a better idea whether or not your plans will work since he knows more about the Focus than even Ford. Good luck and keep us posted!

i have thought about an awd focus myself, for where i live it snows about7-8 months of the year, but like achilleus stated im not that rich, i also thought that the escape would work for the same engine, but good luck to ya, hope it works out, then my dream will become a reality, except i wont own it. Escape system with 4 cyl could work for sure, but it wouldn't be the same as a MazdaSpeed6 style of AWD. Whether or not programming can be added or changed, or wheel spin sensors can be used to complement the programming on the system would be something you'd have to find someone else to comment on.

Zetec and Duratec might have different bell housings. Focus Salvage would know more, and they seem to be the experts at junkyard motor swaps..ya gotta love what those guys have done with the cars.

I'd be curious where you'd find a place for the driveshaft going to the rear axle without messing up space for exhaust.

What I love about this board is that no one has started hatin' on this guy yet. I had the idea of building a rear wheel drive Escort so I posted on FEOA.net. Those guys gave me like 100 replies aying Too much, why waste your time, you can't do it. When I finally finished it and showed videos of me making a 11 sec pass they all had to shut up. (I really love escorts) I just like how people on this board encourage and not try to tear down.

If you have the means to build the Focus AWD then I say do it. I'm waiting to see the results.
