2009 2.0L engine in 2005 ZX4

HELP!

Bought this car from a friend/mechanic and he put in a 2.0 liter, 2009 engine with 14,000 miles (the other engine was bad) The engine in the 05 was also a 2.0 liter

Now he says the cam sensor will not read correctly and the check engine light will not go out, despite resetting it. We are concerned it will not pass inspection with the check engine light on. My friend/mechanic says he wants to change the engine to a 2005 model. Says he was told only a 2005 engine will go into a 2005 focus...

Is there anyway to get this low-mileage 2009 engine to stay in the car and what would it cost? He says he can get a 2005 engine for about 500 but I would really like to keep the 2009 low-mileage engine he already installed. There must be a way to program the computer for the newer engine. Evidently the 09 engine has a different sensor lobe on the cam, its pretty narrow and the 05 sensor lobe looks more like a valve lobe and one sensor is 3-wire, the other 2-wire.

This will be my first focus. I sat in the car and really liked it. Never even drove it before I paid him for the car and I really want this car to get running!

Thanks!

Would changing the ECU and harness be the solution?

Is that very labor intensive and expensive? I would be glad to spend another few hundred to keep that engine...

The cam sensor wheel on the cam is different in the 09. At the very least you would need to put the 05-07 cams in it. I am not sure if there is an differences in the head, but I don't think there is.

The mechanic said the cams have different lifts, he would have to change heads.
