Can you pull a SPI engine out of a Focus w/o pulling trans?

Hi all,

I searched all over this website before I posted this question, and frankly I was amazed that this hadn't already been covered, but I couldn't find it if it has.

Anyway, I have the dreaded SPI engine in my Focus, and it crapped the bed quite spectacularly the other day - I actually found the big end of one of the con rods that had blown its way out of the bottom of the engine. Amazingly the thing still runs (sort of)!

So I went ahead and found a replacement SPI engine (yes, I'm putting the SPI engine in it, even though in retrospect I should have gone with the ZETEC swap). I already have the engine, and am in the process of undoing everything, and I'm hoping someone who has done this before can give me some guidance; I'm trying to pull the engine without pulling the transmission - it is an automatic btw - it looks like it will be a very tight fit, and I'm going to pull the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) to make more room.

I do have a lift, but I'm trying to go out through the top - It looks as if there would be cylinder head to transmission clearance issues if I were to try and go out the bottom with it. I've removed all the crap up front to make more room, and the only caveat is that the flexplate to torque converter attachments are nuts/studs instead of bolts - those b*stards at Ford are losers for designing it that way, imho.'

SO MY QUESTION IS - HAS ANYONE PULLED AN SPI ENGINE OUT OF A FOCUS WITHOUT PULLING THE (AUTOMATIC) TRANSMISSION???

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chuck

Pulling a SPI engine from a Focus

Well, in case anyone else was wondering the answer to this question - Yes, you can pull the engine w/o pulling the (automatic) trans. I'm sure you would have to pull them together if it was a manual trans, btw. You do need to remove the crank pulley and the bracket containing the tensioner and idler pulleys to allow for clearance, but otherwise it isn't too bad.
