What VIN to look for 2.3L swap

Is the ST motor different than the PZEV motor for a D20 to D23 swap? I have found numerous "VIN Z" motors which is the PZEV 2.3L I believe. No good? What should I be looking for and what to look out for? Ideally, a wrecked ST would be great, but they are hard to find. Any ideas?

Vin "z" is a 2.3 where vin "n" is a 2.0, it doesn't matter the year whether its a PZEV car or not.

So what does that mean? What are the differences between the two 2.3L engines and how can you tell? Why does the ST put out more power? What about the 2.3L in other Ford vehicles or in Mazdas? I want a direct swap without trying to modify something to fit.

VIN Z is a 2.3 in almost any vehicle. Based on what I've found, all the fwd 2.3 shortblocks are the same. The heads are different on the Fusions and Escapes (VVT). The PZEV pieces on a Focus are all external to the longblock as best I can see (new one goes in this weekend. You have to swap the intake? and exhaust manifolds to make a "regular" 2.3 a PZEV 2.3 and vice versa. Can i use a 2.3 pzev in a

My guess is the HP differentials are due to different exhaust setups. The PZEV uses a beast of an exhaust manifold that is really a catalytic converter which has to be more restrictive than almost anything else.

I've asked Tom before if PZEV could be totally gotten rid of on my D23 PZEV, and he says it's not only the air injection pipe, Three o2 sensors, and the cat on the exhaust manifold that makes a PZEV a PZEV.

There is something in the ECU that also makes a PZEV a PZEV, and it can not be tuned out.

So if you have a PZEV, you can not make it not a PZEV.

Well I will be using the ecu from my 2.0, so....just find the block and add the external pieces (aftermarket header, aftermarket intake manifold) and good to go I presume.

Yes.

Just the head? No. I have read that the 2.0L ecu will work fine after a 2.3 swap. A tune is all that is needed.

Both motors 20 & 23 use imrc. The 23 adds imtv= 2 runner manifold= 13'' short runner & a 17'' long runner. Thats what gives the 23 low end grunt & top end pull. You'd need the 23 pcm to make the runners work. The 23 escape uses imtv only= no imrc. Thats the ideal manifold to use.
