2004 2.3 drivetrain swap into 2001 NEWBIE

I bought a 2001 focus from a friend with a SPI thats JUNKED out. I bought a complete 2004 rolled over with a 2.3. What all has to be switched to make the vehicle operated correctly. I am an ase master tech, so no big deal just need to know what needs to be swapped for sure. I also have the ford IDS system if the keys/IC needs programming. Did a search and didnt come up with the info I need. I have the complete car so I know I can make it work. I will be selling whats left of the rolled vehicle when done. Thanks

Everything as in axle shafts? Cluster? Interior wire harness? Interior fuse panel? Does it mean it has to come down to the bare shell? Was looking for more specifics. ASE master tech does not mean I am versed in engine swaps I usually rebuild or replace with equal equipment. The forums have more info with real world swaps. Thanks for the info.

every wiring harness, motor, tranny, axles, shift base, shift cables, cluster, pretty much everything in the engine bay. you will have to take your dash off to get to the wiring harness behind it.

Upon closer inspection do I need to do anything with the brakes? Looks like the 04 has abs and maybe the 01 dont? Will the pcm and such be happy without abs input?

I've done this swap. The easiest way is to completely strip your car and transfer everything over from the duratec car. also realize the base of the motor mounts are not welded to the frame in the same locations. You can just swap the engine mounts over but the engine will sit further back by about 1.5" unless you remove and reweld the base of the engine mounts. If you plan on any modifications engine wise you will need to take that into account also.

Other than that its pretty straight forward remove and replace. For the abs just swap the brake master cylinder and abs components. There should be holes in the body to do so.

I highly recommend using the duratec gas tank and pump. Its a better flowing setup than any zetec or svt pump and would be easy.

Everything as in this:

Axles
Engine mounts
Cluster
ALL WIRING from the engine to the grey/blue plug in the back
Shifter cables, shifter
PS lines
A/C lines (From pump to accumulator, also swap the accumulator)
Steering wheel, both airbags

Easiest way to remove the dash and about half the interior wiring is to undo the gold bolts at the door jambs, and by the little triangle brackets by the shifter. And there is one bolt hidden on the driver side under a cap, you need an extension too. And just unplug everything and keep whatever is on the dash there.

For the fan control cables, cut a tiny slit in the dash and just slide the cables through the larger hole. You'll see what I mean.

Unless you want to cut a massive hole into your transplant car, you need to drop the fuel tank. It's super easy. Reason is because the plug that goes to the pump can't be accessed unless you cut a hole in the metal or drop the tank.

As for the keys, you can either swap all the lock tumblers, just the ignition, or reprogram it. Sedan and hatch lock tumblers for the hatch/trunk are not interchangeable, but everything else is.

Just an update and looking for a little more info. I have all the drivetrain and interior wiring harness, pcm etc all swapped. Had to change the fuel lines. Is the fuel tank the same dimensions from the zx3 to swap into the 2001 body? The connectors and emmisions canister is completely different. The 01 is plastic and the 04 is metal, and shaped a little different. Will it bolt up the same? Winding down the project should be running in a week or so. Thanks for the help so far.

Yes the tanks will bolt into each others body.

Also just FYI, everything also includes front seats and both air bags. Ford changed the wiring in 02 so the plugs on those is different from the 01.
