I'm not an expert on this but the many threads I've read all indicate that you will need to use the ECU as well and I highly doubt a Cougar ECU is going to work on a Focus. But you could probably use the ECU from a Focus that had an MTX?

The cougars MTX mounts differently. The cougar has front and rear roll restrictors, where the focus has a dogbone mount. Not saying its impossible; but its not a bolt in and go. Better off getting a focus trans.

You can use the cougar/contour MTX-75, however they have a different final drive then the Zetec MTX-75 so you will find yourself revving higher on the expressway and in term probably hurt your fuel economy when compared to the zetec MTX-75 found in the focus.

If you go that route you want to make sure you get an MTX-75 from a Zetec Cougar or Contour, you need to get the bell housing from a Focus MTX-75. This is due to the way the Contour/Cougar trans mounts to the frame, the Contour uses a fully close O shaped frame, the Focus uses a C shaped frame which only has 1 roll restrictor (known as the dog bone) which mates up to the Focus bell housing.

So in short... Yes the Contour/Cougar MTX-75 will work, make sure the trans is from a zetec model started at 1998, but you will also need a focus MTX-75 bell housing, and would also want to find a Focus shift tower, and point number two, the ECU does not need to be from a contour, ECU's don't have any particular software for an MTX gearbox, they don't control where the shift points are etc etc... Just make sure you get an ECU from a Focus of the same year with an MTX.
