From SPI to Zetec. Need motor swap help please!!!

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that it would probably pay off in the long run to do a Zetec swap in my 02 Focus SE. It dropped an exhaust valve seat on cylinder #2 and mashed the piston up as well as the cylinder head. No scars or scratches on cylinder wall (VERY shocking!!!) but I'm afraid the damaged piston wouldn't last long, or it may have done something to the rod. I'm figuring it would cost me just as much to put in a new piston and a re-manufactured cylinder head as it would to go to the local you pullit and get a Zetec from one of the tons of wrecked Focuses there.

I have seen that some of the Focus enthusiasts on here who have done the swap say its easy, while the other ones say its hard and to just to fix the SPI and sell it to get a Zetec Focus. I originally bought this Focus with the engine problem to fix and resell. Never thought it would be this major of a problem. I was gonna fix the SPI and resell it to get a Zetec Focus. Now, it seems as if swapping it would make more sense.

Any opinions or advice from the people who have done the swap is greatly appreciated. If there is a "how to" section on the swap, and a list of all the things I will need, please send me the links. Thank you in advance!!!

dude it's out there so much...... SO much. google zetec swap and most of those will show you what you need. Also go look at drunkyoda's thread because I just found out today that I don't even need to swap my dash harness because it's an 02. Just the passenger side ECU one that goes to the fuel pump and the engine one (well so I believe) I'm still figuring that out.

basically we have the "cake" year of focus for a zetec swap

huh this must be why I can fit a zetec cluster in my car. never thought of that.

Any questions, ask away. This is my build thread. I watched mine done for the most part. If you have a good back (unlike mine) and you have tools it wasn't bad at all. Pretty straight forward.

MOTOR DIED TODAY! No joke!!

Maybe we should make a definitive spi to zetec swap thread and sticky it. It's not that complicated it's like engine harness, ecu, ecu to fuel pump harness and a bunch of small stuff. I'll find my lists of everything we needed to do my fiancÚs swap

engine
tranny, shifter mechanism, shift cables, axles(if 5 speed)
harness- ok im going to explain this a little. if you have an 02.5 or newer and you get a motor from 02.5 or newer you DONT have to change any other harness except for the fuel pump harness that goes all the way through the engine. This should also work for 02.5 and before(i am not sure on this as i have an 03)
speedo out of same car(it will be nicer)
throttle cable
then of course all the coolant lines and crap like that.
also the passenger side mount AND base are completely different and sits alot lower.

there you go now good luck!

Actually you could use the ib5 if you wanted, and the auto ransmission is the same also. We did auto to auto on my fiancÚs car and DID NOT need axles. We needed the ecu, two harnesses, upper and lower radiator hose, plastic coolant tube on radiator support, pass engine mount, flex pipe, aftermarket intake for zetec or the larger oem zetec intake tube. Iirc they use the same maf and maf housing. That's really about it.

And in case anyone was wondering, the Zetec will start and run with the spi ecu...

have you ever heard of anyone using an ib5? without serious modification? no. also you will need the ecu out of the zetec car.

did you not see the (if 5 speed)?

you will also need to get your key reprogrammed.

Yes lol... Thats why i said it. It's the same bell housing pattern... A friend of mine swapped in an mtx75 in place of his ib5 on his spi car. And I remember someones swap they kept the ib5 with the zetec because they didn't have money for the mtx75 and cables and shit.

Ecu was already mentioned, and I assumed everyone already knew they would need to reprogram their keys
