SVT to 2.3 Duratech

I've found a couple threads talking about the swap, is anyone running this setup? I'm thinking of getting out of my SVTF for a rotary... but I love my SVTF!! If I could swap to a 2.3 duratech and make some good reliable power then I'll stop being bummed out from the lack of balls in the SVT.
Yea I could turbo the zetec blah, blah, blah.. but I dont want to continue to sink money into this powerplant if I can do a swap that would open up even more options pertaining to making power.

side note: I'll NEVER get rid of my SVTF, it's the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel. I live in a pretty rural area with tons of twisty back roads that run through the pine forrests. I just want more.

Thanks for helping me figure this out

i say turbo, but thats not the answer you are looking for.

Is all the work of a 2.3 swap worth a couple hp? You will still need to add FI for any real power. If you start with the original engine, there is possibly more money to be spent on the upgrades. just my .02

I agree that I'd have to eventually turbo the duratech, as far as is it worth it.. well that's what I'm trying to decide. How much more power is there in a turbo d vs a turbo z?
From what I know the zetec is just older and not capable of making the same numbers, so if I need to drop some coin just to get a better starting point then I guess I'm comfortable with that.

How much room is there to fit a good flowing turbo manifold and a big turbo for big numbers?

Looks like you'd be getting more help in the FI section.
From my understanding a stock svt zetec will hold up to more boost than the stock duratec because of some of it's stronger internals.
With that in mind, if you are going for the highest possible output, you're looking at an engine swap AND built internals + boost. I'm not sure if that's worth it when you could just add built internals to your svt block and then add boost, though I'm sure someone else w/ a bit more knowledge will speak up.

Use a standard zetec block with forged pistons and rods with the Svt top end on it for boost. If u compare n/a Svt to n/a 2.3 the Svt is cheap. Yeah around 220 whp out of a 2.3 is possible but adding up the parts for the 2.3 is up there. Svt doesn't need cams has big ports in the head and 10.2 comp to begin with. Were u goin to a 5spd swap too?

If I were to swap to the 2.3 then yes I would swap to a 5spd as well since the gertag wouldnt bolt up without some heavy modification from what I've read.
I was thinking of starting off in the FI threads but since the turbo would be a probably/eventually part of the project I chose to start with the actual motor questions.
I've looked at doing a 2.3 stroker kit as well but that poses the same problem imo, should I stroke a zetec that wouldn't make the same power as a stroked duratec?
This is all early desicion making process so nothing has been decided upon just yet, like i mentioned in my op, I may just stop working on the svtf and get a rotary to play with.
What I'd like is to have the svtf make me smile like it did when I first slaped on the bolt on's and tune, amazing difference from stock... in order to do that I need to boost my current zetec, stroke the current zetec w/ plans on boosting, or swap to the duratec w/ pretty much the same eventual plan to boost....or I guess I could just do the 302 swap lol.
Once a duratec swap is complete w/o boost would I be better off that I am with a bolt on modified zetec? I suppose I sholuld ask the same question for the 2.3 stroker kit as well.

How much power are you looking to get? 400+whp?

You can boost whatever you have to however much power you decide to build the bottom end to handle.

I don't see a reason to swap motors. And I certainly wouldn't stroke a motor in a car that I wasn't going to be seriously racing.

Stay with the Zetec. More options so far with mods. No need to really stroke unless you want to drag race and want the extra torque. Keep in mind the short shifting you may to do. They don't like high rpms.

Whats kept me out of stroking the svtf so far is the torque, I have ZERO interest in drag racing this car, purely time attack in the back woods. 400+ seems ambitious but I'd like to have the ability to run nearly that high if I wanted to, for the most part I'd dd @ 200-250ish. The important part for me is that I love the car, will never get rid of it, and I'm comfortable spending illogical money on it for nothing more than personal satisfaction. The problem really is the fact that I a. dont know a lot about cars and b. havent really got a concrete goal in mind....that being said it really seems likely that I'll keep the zetec in place and look at options from there.
I dont see myself trying to push more than 300 crank hp out of it and I know I can accomplish that with a boosted zetec, I'm just entertaining the idea of doing it differently.
Thanks for all the input, I can see my blurry path becoming clearer now...
Anyone know a great svtf shop in Texas?
