Help. Am I paying too much

my car was leaking oil. Major leak. Had a diagnostic test done. They want $860 for repairing front pump main transmission seal, valve cover gasket, right lowe ball joint. Does that sound right? One of those quickie franchise places.

Sounds high. Take it to a trans shop for the seal estimate. Do the valve cover and ball joint yourself.

to replace that seal you have to R&R the trans so that seems... slightly high but not out of the question.

really you run engine oil through your ball joint??? (pointing at them trying to find anything possible that's wrong with your car when you're only there to fix the leak)

and practically all newer cars never crap out a main seal. sounds like they're trying to hit all the areas that could possibly leak in order to get the most out of ya.

^^ for what it is, yes..... but why does he need a ball joint to fix an oil leak, especially if it's just a valve cover gasket.

IMO it sounds like their "diagnostic test" involves finding anything that has to do with keeping oil in, then look for anything else to repair on the vehicle. Cost is honest for work to be performed though

Changing the valve cover gasket is easy; you can probably do it in less than an hour. Ball joint is a bit more difficult, but still doable.

But the tranny repair is what's gonna kill ya. If you're not used to it, it can take you like 2-3 days to pull out a Focus tranny.
