Cool mikebontoft's "Powered by Subaru" build thread (W/PICS of course!)

Most recent MAJOR update: page 10; 3-10-10

ALRIGHT..... the time has come for me to stop talking and start doing.

About the build: Final product should literally be pretty much a Subaru with a Focus body and interior. Yeah it's a lot of work but that's why I'm doing it. IT WILL BE UNIQUE. Victim is an 02 Focus SE. It will be getting an Euro front end, 05 black interior, and 05 rear end. Also either twin turbo or twin scroll turbo

Engine: EJ25 from 02 Outback wagon, pulled from customer's vehicle in poor but running condition.

Transmission: Unbelievably hard to find the name for one, but any AWD manual transmission built within the past three decades will do.

AWD/suspension components: stock Subaru outback components, or other. need to do a little more examination. it will be mechanical AWD or "continuous" for some people.

Other: most likely both subframes will have to be replaced and/or modified as either a hybrid or direct installation (modified direct of course) from the Subaru. This means five-lug hubs though!

Fuel Tank needs to be measured still, however it looks JUST like our stock ones (even the way it straps on) but with another side to it in which currently the muffler goes.

A 2000 stock subaru ECU will be used, or something similar for that matter. hopefully can get my hands on an STi or WRX gauge cluster though :)

Cooling and A/C system is fairly simple, and should work with mine without much hassle.

Measurements!

These were taken from either manufacturer's manual or my own measuring skills. The focus, I haven't gotten to do any extensive measurements on yet, but I will when I get a chance.

ENGINE dimensions in INCHES (just like all of my measurements)
Front to bellhousing mount surface: 18.5"
Valve cover to valve cover: 30.5"
Oil pan to intake 25"

The actual engine bay opening specs of the subaru
34.25" Wide
35.75" long

Trans width (after bellhousing) approx. 8"
height with trans mount 15" (bellhousing included. otherwise approx 8")

02 Outback specs:
Front track: 57.9"
Rear track: 58.7"
wheelbase: 105.1"

02 Focus sedan specs:
Front track: 58.4"
Rear track: 58.1"
wheelbase: 103"

Nothing I can't modify to fit. most of them are just fractions of an inch out of spec.

FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS besides measurements of course, would be removal of the Subaru engine!

(apologies for the lack of quality photos right now)

This engine was removed and replaced due to knocking of the engine. The replacement was $2,100 like the rest of them going for that price. Unfortunately the replacement was lacking in a few areas, such as a dented up driver's side cam pulley, busted timing cover, and a missing oil filler neck.

a lot of the bolts from the power steering pump and A/C unit actually snapped off in the block. No issues, all I need is patience and a steady hand. I've done it before anyway

No big deal, as my next step in this build is to pull apart the engine, rebuild the internals ( possibly some reinforcements as well depending on budget) and rebuild/replace almost everything else on the engine. Also hopefully a lovely color scheme going on

That's all for today! wish me luck

That is quite the undertaking. Good luck with the build.

Basically I'll just say one thing...you're crazy!

Good luck with the build though. I look forward to watching it as it goes.

you dont have to specifically use outback parts most subaru parts work on many vehicles.
if that a sohc i wouldnt use it.

one good thing about subie blocks and head are they are all aluminum so they are light as hell.

i wouldnt use outback hubs or knuckles, you should use all sti parts or 06-07 wrx part (which were all aluminum i believe)
you don thave to use an outback tranny for the engine, any tranny from subie should bolt up.

one reason why the evo would be a better choice in my opinion is
wheelbase (inches): 103.3
front track (inches): 59.6,
rear track (inches): 59.6

you would get a wider track, and also the wheel base is so close, and they layout of the engine and tranny is very identical for the most part to a focus.

with the subie you will have to custom a floor pan or w/e to make room for the centered tranny and driveshaft.

i commend you on your effort and will like to see this come together

you know, Mike, there was somebody that did this with a zx3 and it sold on ebay about a year ago. I have the pics saved, but on another computer that i can't access now. I think you should find those pics for ideas. I'll try to find them for you.

if I had a ton of money I'd use sti and or evo parts but I don't.

got the engine free, grabbing any trans for 45, subframes are 60 each I think..... ill make it work.

yes it is sohc as I'd rather not crap head gaskets

Unique indeed. I'd like to see it work as well. If you're going to run any boost through this thing, it definitely needs strong internals. Getting everything else to fit aside...wiring will be the bane of your existence. I've heard getting all the lights and such to work even between Duratec and Zetec is hard so I can only imagine.

And yeah, post up lots of pics. It helps keep the motivation up. And we might be able to help you with fitment issues :)
