Nope, my 408 hit the hood and the Lightning is a taller setup.

Taller and heavier. The pushrod engines are best for the Focus in size terms. If you're worried about weight and cost is not much of a concern (which is shouldn't be if you're thinking about this) then search around for a used aluminum block 302 or 351.

if the Lightning motor is only taller in the middle it might fit under a Mustang style cowl hood

Even if it does fit, it'd be cheaper and probably much easier to put a carbed something based on the 5l block in (302-408ci). Unless you're going for a show only setup

yea i saw alot of them with the cobra 4.6s and i know the 5.4 is the same block just longer stroke, but i guess that little bit along with the charger and intake adds up.
yea i got my first focus at 16 (2007) black zx3, then i got hit by a drunk driver in an old f150 filled with logs. he was doin about 45 and he said" i never saw anything in front of me"
anyway after the wreck i decided i wanted a larger vehicle so i got a f150. i have been wanting a lightning and its just crazy how much they hold their value, still. so i looked into getting a old beat up svt focus for a couple grand and then putting a v8 in it. i figure i could get it and drive it and save up for the swap in the mean time.

You do realize that the needed stuff for the swap runs around $6,000.... and thats just the swap kit.

And good luck finding an "old beat up" svt for a couple grand. But more power to you if you can.

why not just get an old zx3. it would be much easier to find and cheaper than an svt. if you like the looks of the svt then just get the bumpers used. the only other diff that would be relevant after a swap like this would be the front brakes and interior.

if you want to swap in a v8 ford motor the 5.4 gets my vote for sure. they are just to damn bulky and expensive for me. i chose chevy for mine.
