5.4 found...

Ok... so I've located a 5.4 Lightning engine and tranny for a great price, just ironing out the details.
The plan is to get everything ready and in place for the swap to happen in the next 2 years. In the mean time I'm going to tear down the 5.4 and build the engine (400hp?). The car will be for commuting and car shows. No drag racing (I have a Hemi for that : )

I'm already planning on dropping the tranny for RWD, however, what is the chance that I can leave the car FWD??? That would save some $$$ and shave a year off the install.
All the V8s I've seen thus far have been RWD

Thanks!

Chance?
Ever hear how much of a chance a snowball has in h e double l?

You'd have to mount the V8 in a transverse orientation, and somehow find a V8 transaxle.
Then, widen the car by about a foot at least so it would all fit.

Hey 'giggles'... I was thinking of using a split hydromatic tranny like the 71'Toronado used. Which allows the engine to remain in north/south position. My concern was, that the tranny would not fit, without having to move the firewall/dash back about 2ft... keep in mind that the 5.4 is shorter then the 455ci that the olds used... now that I think about it... the 5.4 could sit forward a bit... hmmm ... food for thought.

Anyway, I was just brain-storming for ideas. I'm glad you found it amuzing.

do what the vettes do, place the tranny in the rear. it will improve weight distribution. i have no idea what tranny would be used to accomplish this nor do i know any other details. but if i were to do a v8 swap, i would keep the engine as close to the firewall as absolutely possible and keep the tranny in the rear. yeah, this will prolly cause you to do a rear seat delete cause you will have to cut out the floor to place it back there. who knows. maybe 2 right side rear seats will work and put the hump in the middle.

just spitballin here....

I think vettes use a torque tube. Much easier to do conventional v8/rwd swap

So...... you're gonna rebuild the 5.4 and you're only looking to gain 15hp???

Especially since the last couple of years of Lightnings made 385hp. I'd do a pully swap, better MAF and a set of long tubes and that'll put you closer to 500whp or maybe just a tad more.
