what did I get myself into?

Ok, so I'm pretty much new to this small car thing. I just bought a Focus SE single cam today yesterday $150 that needs a motor. I know the single cam (spi, correct?) motors are notorious for dropping valve seats so I really don't want to put another one in there. What gets me is Duratec, Zetec, blah blah blah. I don't care about making mad power, that's what my 454 is for. What I DO care about is having a reliable daily driver (to replace the '05 Dodge) and it seems swapping in a twin cam is the way to go. I'm not asking what all is needed to swap the motors as I know how to use the search button and I know how to turn a wrench. But if anybody could point towards something that kinda gives a breakdown of what the major differences in motors are, what cars had what motors in them, what the best (simplest) swap would be, what motor will work with what tranny, so on and so forth, it would be greatly appreciated. Like I said, I'm completely new to this game so hopefully I'm not beating a dead horse here. Thanks in advance.

Tyler

if it is an automatic you could use the same tranny on a zetec. in order to use the zetec you will need the under hood engine harness, the harness from the ecu to under the hood on the passenger side, the ecu, and to have the keys reflashed. the exhausts are different so make sure you have a zetec exhaust. zetec would be the easiest i assume. i have just completed my spi to zetec swap on my girlfriends car and i had everything done in six days but it wasnt my first swap either. let me know if i can help anymore

the simplest is another SPI engine......

the cheaper option is a Zetec.

As mentioned, if it's an auto transaxle, Zetec and SPI are the same. if not you'll need another one. I do not know about the Duratec auto transaxle.

00-04 focus sedans LX and SE had the 8v SOHC (SPI) engine in them. Some 00-04 wagons were also equipped with the same engine. ZX3 and ZX5 models were not equipped with them at all. The manual transaxle is called the IB5 in this one.

00-04 Foci were mostly Zetec engines, available in pretty much every trim package and vehicle. These are the DOHC 16v engines. The manual transaxle is an MTX-75.

04-07 have a 2.3L Duratec in them, though not a TOO common option. Only available in the ST sedan versions, and some hatches. the 04 was a PZEV (think, Cali ) model ONLY, if I remember correctly. 05-07 were mostly equipped with the 2.0L Duratec, and with only the two choices of Duratecs available. 08 and up foci are only available with a 2.0L Duratec. The manual MTX-75 from this one, as I've read, does not work so well with the Zetec.

edit: I guess I feel like adding in two other bits of info. LOL.

SVT 16v DOHC.... if I remember correctly was offered in the SVT from years 02-04. These were basically a performance version of the Zetec. The transaxle is a 6 speed Getrag. no auto transaxle offered in these.

thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. like i've said before and will probably say again, this is completely uncharted territory for me. the car was just too good a deal to pass up lol. It is an auto tranny with the single cam, so it looks like all i really need is the motor, comp, wiring, etc... and the search shall continue. maybe i can stumble on a deal for a motor like i did on the whole car. wouldn't that be nice...

zetec-E is the dual over head cam!four cylinder in line type mounted transfersly at the front of the vehicle with the transmission on its left hand end. all major engine castings are alluminum alloy. the zetec-E differs from previous generations of the zetec in that it has a cast alluminum alloy lower crank case that is bolted to the underside of the cylinder block :with a pressed steel oil pan bolted under that"this arrangement offers greater rigity then the normal oil pan arrangement, and helps to reduce engine vibration"!
