Arrow PLease READ! Swapping a Zetec engine to a duratec engine

My Car has been making horrendous and obnoxious, loud noises. It violently shakes and vibrates and has begun to loose power and idles roughly and loudly. You sit in the car and all you do is shake. My Boyfriend has found someone wanting to sell their Duratec engine. Mine is a 2001 SE Sedan with 141,000 miles on it. It is a Zetec. Will swapping the engine make it better? Will it fix the cars problem? It is misfiring and one of the spark plugs has made a cylinder go out and it's running on only 3 cylinders. So would doing the swap save the car? Thanks to anyone who may be able to help me. It's very Frustrating.

To answer your question. If done right it CAN save your car IF done correctly, but may cost you more money than needed to get your focus running again. That is if you just want your car to get from A to B w/o any headaches of an engine swap. Keep in mind that a swap from your Zetec to a D-tec may possibly cause more problems rather than fixxing the problem you have now. Zetecs are very common engines, I wouldn't be surprised to see you swap out your old poor running Zetec for a new Zetec with less miles for cheap (well alot cheaper than a complete Duratec swap) and much easier too since your car is already a Zetec setup!

These are the things to keep in mind when choosing your options:

Zetec-to-Duratec Swap:

Engine
Trans
Wiring Harness
Fuel Pump
Fuel Lines
ECU/PCM
Shifter (possibly)
Gauge Cluster (for D-tec ECU to properly feed the Speed and such to you on dash)
Splicing in D-tec harness to Zetec harness

Zetec Replacement Engine:
Pulled Zetec Motor from Donor car
Motor + Friends (knowledgeable) + Free Weekend = Running Focus!

Zetec Rebuild:
Right Parts + Friends (knowledgable) + free weekend = Running Focus!!!

Pick your option wisely! Also check out the process for a Zetec to Duratec swap in this forum!

agreed. a zetec to duratec swap just isnt very cost effective. its a pain in the neck, it will take at least a week unless you know exactly what you are doing before you even start the project, and it will be almost as expensive as buying a new used car. your best bet would be to either locate a new low mileage zetec engine for as cheap as possible and drop it in or just fix the one you have.

Do either of you think that the transmission may be causing any problems? Or do you think it is simply the engine itself? How much would diagnosing the problem be? I know the Ford Dealership price would be outrageous. Does Full coverage insurance cover anything to fix the car for cheaper?

Look at your coil pack, you need to test for spark on all 4 cylinders so do that first. Could be broken where you can't see it like when mine fried, or you could have some problems with the wiring that plugs into it. But swapping an engine is a silly solution for a spark problem if that's all it is. You basically want to check coil, wires, and plugs.

Damn if I was still in Dothan I'd come take a look for you. You know anyone else with a Zetec focus? Swap around ignition parts and see if it changes anything. Everything on the ignition can be changed in 5 minutes so it's an easy job.
